Biography

Born in Leningrad when she was 9 years old, the family emigrated to the United States ( Colorado ). She studied first at McGill University in Montreal , then since 1996 at the University of New York [2] . Her graduation work in 1998 was the Moment of Impact documentary, in which she shows the daily life of her family after her father got into a car accident in 1989 and remained disabled. The film won several prizes at film festivals, including the director’s prize ( Directing Award ) of the Sundance Film Festival , one of the prizes of the San Francisco Film Festival , and the prize for the best documentary for Bavaria’s television ( German Dokumentarfilmpreis des Bayerischen Fernsehens ) at the Documentary Film Festival Munich, as well as the prize for the best documentary at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival .

In 2006, she shot the feature film Day-Night-Day-Night about a suicide bomber who was supposed to stage a terrorist act in New York , but for reasons beyond her control the terrorist attack failed. According to Loktev [3] , the idea of the film came to her after she read the story of Zarema Muzhakhoeva , a Chechen terrorist who was unable to detonate a bomb in Moscow and was arrested in a Russian newspaper. The starring role in the film starred Louise Williams . The film was shown in the Quinzaine des Realisateurs section of the Cannes Film Festival and was awarded the Regard jeune prize. The film also won other prizes, including the Someone to Watch Award of the Independent Spirit Film Festival. It was withdrawn with funds provided by the German central television channel ZDF and the Franco-German Arte [4] and was shown on these channels.
