Aleksei Parfyonovich Sapunov ( March 15, 1851 , m. Usvyaty - October 2, 1924 , Vitebsk , USSR ) - Russian historian , local historian and archaeologist . The author of works on the history, archeology and regional studies of Belarus , belonged to the circle of Western Russians [1] .

Biography
Alexey Sapunov was born into an Orthodox merchant family in the town of Usvyaty, Velizhsky district, Vitebsk province . He was educated at the district school, then from 1862 to 1869 he studied at the Vitebsk gymnasium . Then he entered the Faculty of History and Philology of St. Petersburg University , from which he graduated in 1873 . He was left at the department, but in the same year he was forced to return to Vitebsk due to eye disease and the need to work out a ministerial scholarship. There he began to teach Latin and Greek at the Alexander Gymnasium . Sapunov began to print in 1881 , in which his essay “Historical Information about Vitebsk Castle” was published in the “Memorial Book of the Vitebsk Province for 1881”. Since that time, he began to publish his works on history and local history. In 1892, at the initiative of Evdokim Romanov and with the blessing of the Archbishop of Polotsk and Vitebsk, Antonin , a church-archaeological ancient storage was founded, the organization of which was entrusted to Sapunov together with Vasily Govorsky . Sapunov taught until 1896 , and then, in 1897 , served in Moscow as an assistant inspector at the university until 1901 . In that year, he got a job as secretary of the provincial statistical committee in Vitebsk , where he served until 1917 . He was elected honorary magistrate of the Vitebsk district. He was a member of the October 17 Union .
In 1907 he was elected to the III State Duma from the Vitebsk province by a congress of landowners (Sapunov was the landowner of Vitebsk district , had forty dessiatines and a house in Vitebsk). He was a member of the Union of October 17 faction. He was a member of the land and Chinshev law commissions.
In 1909, Sapunov took part in the creation and work of the Vitebsk Scientific Archaeographic Commission , the Church and Archaeological Museum. He taught at the Vitebsk branch of the Moscow Archaeological Institute (1911-1924) and at the Vitebsk Institute of Public Education . Since 1913, a professor [2] . He rose to the rank of State Councilor (1911).
Sapunov was an honorary member of many scientific societies and commissions in Vitebsk, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Mogilev , was an honorary citizen of Velizh . He was awarded the Uvarov Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences .
He died on October 2, 1924 in Vitebsk, was buried at the Troichansky (Troitsky) cemetery. In 1987, a street in Vitebsk was named after him. At the entrance to the building of the Voronezh State University there is a bust of Alexei Sapunov [3] .
