Rugby League History

As an independent sport, rugby league dates back to 1895. Historically, the north of England is considered to be the homeland of rugby league, whose less affluent residents (mostly miners) decided to practice rugby on a professional level. To do this, they had to modify the rules of classic rugby to make the game more dynamic and spectacular. In the prosperous south of England, a rugby union developed, which until the end of the 20th century remained an amateur sport.

Rugby League Rules

Two teams of 13 people play rugby league. The match consists of two halves of 40 minutes. The goal of the game is to land the ball in the score zone outside the opponents' goal. Taking the test zone is called “try” and brings 4 points. The team that made the attempt performs “implementation” - the ball is parallel to the side line from the point where it was grounded at a convenient distance, after which a shot is made on goal. Successful implementation is estimated at 2 points. You can also score points from a penalty kick (2 points) or a “drop goal” (a hit that is delivered from a game by a ball bouncing off the ground is called a “field goal” in Australia), which brings 1 point.

The main differences from rugby-15

Rugby League, in contrast to the rugby union (rugby-15) - a faster and more dynamic game. There is less attention paid to the struggle for gaming zones. The key difference: in rugby 15, the captured player must get rid of the ball, for which the teams fight in the “cancer” (free-hand fight). In the rugby league, the captured player must be released, after which the team in possession of the ball starts the next attack. If after six captures the team did not make an attempt, the ball is passed to the opponent. This difference allows you to make the game more entertaining even for a layman.

Other differences: in rugby league there are no such elements of rugby-15 as a pier or corridor, and the appointed fight is carried out without pressure. This reduces the number of pauses.

Rugby League World

Rugby League is cultivated by more than 30 countries. However, it is most popular in England, Australia, New Zealand and France. In Papua New Guinea, rugby league is recognized as a national sport. Australia was the permanent winner of the World Cups from 1975 to 2000. Until November 25, 2005, they did not lose in international matches, until they lost to New Zealand in the final of the Three Nations Cup . In 2008, New Zealand became the world champion. In the 21st century , rugby league has grown in popularity in countries such as Germany , Serbia , Argentina , Malta , Jamaica , the Netherlands , Estonia , Georgia , and Ukraine .
