Taimyr Bay Islands

There are many islands in the Taimyr Bay, the most significant of them:

  • Bera island - the island has a length of about 3.5 kilometers. It is located in the middle of the mouth of the bay, about 13 kilometers from the Kara Sea. Named after renowned biologist Karl Ernst von Baer for his contribution to the development of meteorology in the Arctic in the 1830s .

  • Fomina island - an island with a length of 11.5 and a width of 3.7 kilometers is located deep enough in the Taimyr estuary, divides the main channel into 2 branches. This island is named after the explorer Taimyr Nikifor Fomin.

Research History

The Taimyr Bay was discovered during the Great Northern Expedition in 1740 by the detachment of Nikifor Fomin, who built a house and made a wintering on the island of Bera. In 1741, the shores of the bay were visited by units of Chelyuskin and Khariton Laptev . Khariton Laptev left a description of the Taimyr Bay:

About Taimur Bay

The Taymur Bay extends from the mouth of the Taimura River to the north, between the two main capes, that is, North-West and North-East. Below the mouth of the Taimura River on the east bank, in a narrow lip there is a small winter hut, which was built by the newly baptized Yakut Nikifor Fomin, who hunted Arctic foxes for food. Against that hibernation of fish a contented number. Consisting of teals, muksuns, sesame, nelma, omoli. But there is no other fish here. According to the evo announcement, the Taimura River at the mouth, although it runs in the last days of June, and the Ushaya lip in the large lip makes the channel in the sea always July on the 8th. And on that channel, ice is always in mind. And in the fall of July, and in early August sometimes breaks the entire Taimurskaya Bay, but it does not blow away ice from the south wind a few days later, from sight from high places. The fairway in the Uskaya Bay consists of at least 6 fathoms and there are no shallows from the shores. Full water in the summer, while breaking the lips is not very high. And when the sea stands, at that time there is no full water here, as on the Khatanga River, where they had wintering, on which, through the whole winter, during the most full water, and even more so in the new moon and full moon, the ice breaks and makes many cracks. The Yakut built the winter hut and factories from the old forest, which after 7 years of living there, was contented with firewood with great need, and transported it from the most remote places. And according to his note, in a retailer’s place where there was again an alluvial forest on the shore, he was with whom he had taken water and laid it in another place. The west coast from the mouth of Taimura lies high, flat, clay land with moss. One bank lies all stone, and from it to the north of the island there are stone ones covered with black moss, which deer feed on. And on these islands there are deer that winter here. From the western shore to the north, and to the Northwest Cape in winter, they saw that the ice did not break in summer, and that it showed great holes in the summer, which melted from the sun in summer, and on that ice was covered with ice covered with full water and not frozen in ice.

Middendorf explored the Taimyr Bay and its islands during his Taimyr expedition in 1842-1845. The island of Bera was the northernmost point that he reached when exploring the Taimyr riverbed (reached in August 1843).

Eduard Toll during his Arctic expedition of 1900-1902 explored the mouth of the Taimyr Bay. Toll found a piece of quartz rock on the island of Bera, which Middendorf described. He also found Fomin's wintering place.
