Biography

Marie-Catherine was born in a noble Norman family. Married (08.03.1666) for Francois de la Motte, Baron d'Onoy, who was older than her for more than 30 years and had a reputation as an amateur to drink and an incorrigible lovelover. In 1669, Marie-Catherine (in collusion with her mother) tried to get rid of her spouse, denouncing him for the crime of insulting the king (for which she was given the death penalty). But, by court order, the baron was released, and the so-called "friends" of his wife were sentenced to beheading for slander. Madame d'Onoy was saved only by unbelievable circumstances - she was able to escape through a secret staircase and hide under a hearse in the church.

For fifteen years, Madame d'Onoy was in forced emigration to Europe . In 1675 she lived in England ; she was able to return to France only 10 years later, thanks to the pardon of Louis XIV for court officials. In 1690, Madame d'Onoy opened her own literary and political salon in Paris (the salon was under suspicion of the police as a possible espionage nest), and also visited the famous literary salon of the Marquise de Lambert . Madame d'Onoy was admitted to the Accademia dei Rikoverati in Padua . She died at her home in Paris in 1705.
