History
In 1943, a new district was named Gulripshsky from the Sukhumi region of the Abkhaz ASSR : it included the following village councils: Gulripshsky, Azharsky, Azantsky, Latsky, Zakharovsky, Tsebeldinsky, Olginsky, Merkheulsky (later Bagmaransky was also allocated from it), Majarsky, Drandsky Babushersky, Vladimirovsky and Anastasievsky [6] .

According to the data for 2003 , including Upper Kodor, controlled by Georgia until 2008, out of 19,918 residents of the district 47.1% were Armenians , 24.5% were Abkhazians , 13.6% were Georgians ( Svans , Mingrelians ), 12, 1% - Russians , 0.6% - Greeks , 0.6% - Ukrainians [7] .

According to preliminary data from the 2011 census , the population of the district, including the territory of the Upper Kodor , amounted to 18,146 people [11] . According to the 2011 census, there were 18,032 people [7] .
