History
Walt Disney Records is a family of music labels owned by Walt Disney. Walt Disney Records were formed in 1956 as Disneyland Records. Until that time, Disney records were licensed by a number of other labels such as RCA, Decca, Capitol, and ABC-Paramount. Walt Disney Brother Roy O. Disney suggested that the Walt Disney Productions (currently the Walt Disney Company) organize their own label. Roy assigned Jimmy Johnson, an old employee at the company, to lead this new division, Disneyland Records. The label took its current name in 1989. Jimmy Johnson invited Tutti Camarota (the famous musician and founder of the legendary Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood) to lead the creative start of this new venture. Tutti's experience and mastery turned the initial label designs into full-length music albums, including jazz interpretations of Disney standards (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, and Cinderella) and albums with an original musical concept, and expanded the soundtrack format to include selected parts from the score, as well as famous songs. Tutti's work in the music industry has led to the success of artists such as Mary Martin, Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, Jerry Colonna and Phil Harris.
In search of suitable material for Annette, Tutti and his team discovered the duo songs of Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, having heard one of their songs on the radio. The duo was hosted at Disney's Burbank studio, where they eventually became the first songwriters for Disney. Not only did they write many songs for Annette, but they were also responsible for most of the iconic Disney songs of the 1960s and later - It's a Small World and Tiki Tiki Tiki Room for theme parks, as well as songs from Mary Poppins , "The Jungle Books," The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh . In 1989, the Disneyland label was renamed Walt Disney Records.
Today, Walt Disney Records' product selection ranges from traditional albums and soundtracks to audio books and karaoke albums. Walt Disney Records releases music for Walt Disney Pictures, for the original Disney Channel films, and for Disney performances.
