Biography
Born in Frankfurt am Main, where her father, Viscount de Flavigny, during emigration married a widow from the famous banking house of Marie Betman-Busman. Raised in one of the Parisian monasteries, in 1827 she married Count d'Aguet and then traveled around Switzerland, Italy and Germany for a long time. The count and countess d'Aguo divorced in 1835, after which Marie began an affair with Franz Liszt, who became the father of her youngest children.
Her first novels “Hervé”, “Julien”, “Valentia”, “Nélida” appeared in 1841-1845 in the feuilleton of the newspaper “Presse” and impressed. Then in the Revue des Deux Mondes her articles on German affairs were published, and in the Revue Indépendante (1847) additions to them were placed.
After the February Revolution of 1848, the Countess d'Aguo switched to political literature and wrote Lettres républicaines (Republican Letters), in which morals and people were given a very strict assessment of the reign of Louis Philippe , and Histoire de la révolution de 1848 ( “The History of the Revolution of 1848”, 2 vols., 1861), in which, on the contrary, all the events and figures of that time are excessively exalted.
The Countess d'Aguet also wrote in a fictional form of maxims and aphorisms: her Esquisses morales (Moral Sketches, 1849) set forth the author's views on contemporary aspirations and malice of the day, on the clash between morality and passions and on various positions in human life .
Then came out: "Trois journées de la vie de Marie Stuart" (1856); "Florence et Turin", aesthetic and political studies (1862); "Dante et Goethe", conversation (1866); "Histoire des commencements de la république aux Pays-Bas" (1872).
The Countess d'Aguo left behind a volume of memoirs ("Mes souvenirs" 1877), which depicts a society from the time of the Restoration.
