Biography
Zhulinho was born on the street Pena ( port. Penha ) in Sao Paulo in the family of a grocer. There, on this street, he spent his childhood [4] . He came from a family who came to South America from Italy : his ancestor was an Italian priest from Lucca , who had the surname Bottelli ( Italian Bottelli ), which in Brazil became Botelho.
Club career
Amateur clubs, Palmeiras de Peña and Cruzeiro do Sul, became the first teams of Zhulinho [5] . He began his career as a youth member of the Corinthians Club. From there, at the age of 19, he moved to Juventus from his native city [6] . Where two seasons played for the youth team. In the same football player was transferred to the right flank of the attack, where, subsequently, he spent his entire career. In 1950, the football player was transferred to the first team of the club, making his debut on August 20 in a meeting with Corinthians (2: 2) [7] . After playing there for only six months [1] , Zhulinho, on February 15, 1951 [6] , was bought by the Portuguesa Desportos club, who paid 50 thousand Cruzeiro for the transfer of the midfielder [8] . His debut game was the match against Flamengo on February 18, 1951, where his team lost 2: 5. Six days later, he scored his first goal for the club, hitting the gate of “ America ”; The meeting ended with a victory "Desportos" 4: 2. On November 25, 1951, Zhulinho scored 4 goals in a match with his former club, Corinthians, and his team won the match 7: 3. In the same year, during the Portugal tournament in Europe, Zhulinho offered Inter Milan , but the clubs could not agree. A total of Desportos midfielder played 5 years, spending 191 matches and scoring 101 goals. On July 17, 1955, Julinho held the last match for Portuguesa, in which his team lost to Santos in a friendly game 0: 1 [8] . During this period, his team won two Rio Sao Paulo tournaments [4] . Rulinho himself distinguished himself by his behavior on the field: for 3 years he did not receive a single warning, for which he earned a premium from the Brazilian arbitration league.
July 19, 1955 Zhulinho was bought by the Italian club " Fiorentina " [6] , which paid for the transfer of the midfielder 5,5 thousand dollars [8] . Fulvio Bernardini , who saw a football player at the 1954 World Cup , considered Zhulinho the strongest of the right midfielders of the world, and therefore insisted on buying it, saying: "If we have Zhulinho, we will have a title" [9] . On September 18, the Brazilian scored the first goal for the club, hitting the gate “ About Patria ” (2: 2). In the first season, the footballer helped the club win the Italian Championship , which was the first winning championship in the club's history. In the championship, he spent 31 matches and scored 6 goals. The following season, the club finished second in the championship. In this tournament, Zhulinho scored 7 goals and became the team's top scorer. But the team achieved the greatest success in the Champions Cup , where it reached the final, where it lost to Real Madrid . Zulinho scored one goal in this rally, hitting the gate of Grasshoppers [10] . In the 1957/1958 season, the team again remained in second place, this time losing to Juventus . Julinho held 28 matches and scored 7 goals. The club also reached the Italy Cup final, in which Lazio lost. At the end of the season, the Brazilian, who felt homesick, decided to leave the club. To this he was pushed and leaving the coaching "bridge" team Bernardini, who invited the Brazilian. In total for Fiorentina, he spent 98 matches and scored 23 goals (89 matches and 22 goals in Serie A, 7 matches - 1 goal in the Champions Cup and 2 games in the Grasshoppers Cup ) [11] .
In 1958, Zhulinho returned to Brazil, becoming a player in the Palmeiras club, to whom he preferred the offer of Vasco da Gama . [9] In 1959, Zhulinho helped the club win the Sao Paulo Championship . The Santos and Palmeiras clubs scored the same number of points, and therefore it was decided to hold two additional matches that ended in a draw; after that the third game was held, which was won by the club Zhulino [12] . After the victory, this team was dubbed the “First Academy” ( port. Primeira Academia ). The following year, Julinho won the Brazilian Cup with the team. Julinho played for this club until 1967, winning three Sao Paulo championships, two Rio Sao Paulo tournaments and the Roberto Gomez Pedrosa Cup. He played a farewell match on February 12, 1967 against the Nautico Recife club; in this game he was replaced by 32 minutes of the meeting of Alberto Gallardo [5] . In total for the club, he spent 269 matches and scored 81 goals [4] .
International Career
As part of the Brazilian national team, Julinho made his debut on April 6, 1952 in a match of the Pan American Games against Mexico , in which the Brazilians won 2: 0. At the same tournament, on April 13, he scored the first goal for the national team, hitting the gates of the Panama national team . After four out of five matches in the tournament, Julinho helped his team win this trophy. The following year, Zhulinho drove in the national team for the championship of South America . In the first match of the tournament, with the Bolivian national team , he scored 4 goals, and his team won 8: 1. At the tournament, the midfielder spent all the matches, while Brazil and Paraguay scored the same number of points. As a result, it was decided to play the decisive match between these teams, in which the Paraguayans won 2: 1, and the Brazilians took second place. Julinho scored 5 goals in the tournament, becoming the second scorer of the championship, behind Francisco Molina [13] .
In 1954, Zhulinho drove in the national team for the World Cup . In the first game, he scored a goal, and his team defeated Mexico 5-0. In the second game, the Brazilians tied with Yugoslavia ; it is curious that the Brazilians did not know the rules of the tournament: in particular, when they leveled the score, they continued to attack violently, thinking that a draw would not suit them [14] . In the quarterfinals, they met with Hungary . The match, which took place on June 27, later became known as the “ Battle of Bern ” due to the numerous unsportsmanlike actions of the players and several fighting that broke out [15] ; The Times correspondent reported in his report: “I have never seen such a fierce fight” [16] , including a fight already after the match in the room under the tribune [17] . Brazil lost to the match 2-4, despite the goal of Zhulinho, who alone spent all the defense of the opponent, and flew out of the tournament draw [7] . After the game, the Hungarian striker, Ferenc Puskas , said that Rulinho was the best among the Brazilians [9] . And some said that at that championship he was the best right midfielder of the world [2] .
In 1958, Brazil was preparing for a trip to the World Cup in Sweden. The team's head coach, Vicente Feola , adhered to a policy of not taking on players who are not currently playing in Brazil. And only for one Zulinho he was ready to make an exception. However, the midfielder refused, saying that it was unfair to take away the place from those players who won the right to go to the world championship, speaking at home [6] [18] .
May 13, 1959 Brazil in a friendly match, met with England on the Maracana [19] . The head coach of the team, Vicente Feola, in this meeting put Julinho on the right edge of the midfield, instead of usually playing Garrincha there [7] . When the announcer announced the composition of the Brazilian team, all the spectators who loved the game Garrincha were abruptly silenced, and then in unison “rewarded” the footballer with a draw "boo-oo" [9] . Nilton Santos , who heard this, said to Julinio: “Go there and make him swallow it“ boo ”” [20] . And after two and a half minutes, after the passage and a goal in the upper corner of the goal of Rulinho, he was applauded. And then, when the second goal was scored from his pass, they began to support the player [9] . And at the end of the match they awarded him with a standing ovation, and all 140 thousand spectators greeted him standing; this caused tears in the midfielder, for the first time in his career [9] [21] [22] . The next day, British newspapers came out with the headline: "Brazil now has two Garrinchi" [2] .
In 1960, Zhulinho helped the Brazilians win the Roca Cup . Two years later, Aymore Moreira , the national team coach, offered him participation in the World Championships , but due to knee pain the player refused [9] . The last match for the national team Zhulinho held September 7, 1965, in which Brazil beat Uruguay with a score of 3: 0 [23] . In total for the national team of the country, he held 31 meetings and scored 13 goals [18] .
Coaching career
After the end of his career, he became a coach, training the “Portuguesa”, “Palmeiras” and “Corinthians” [8] . Also worked as a coach of the university team [21] .
Recent years Rulinho lived poorly. He did not have 10 thousand dollars to insert a pacemaker . Because of this, he suffered a stroke and was forced to move in a wheelchair [9] . Zhulinho died on the night of January 10-11, 2003 at the Nossa Seignor da Peña hospital in São Paulo from acute heart failure [1] . There, in the area of Peña, he was buried [4] .
