Biography
Gunar Tsirulis was born on October 8, 1923 in the family of doctors Chaim and Berta Tsivyan. He studied at the 17th Riga secondary school.
Prisoner of the Riga ghetto . December 18, 1941 fled from the so-called. Small ghetto, hiding under the name of his friend Gunar Tsirulis. In 1942, he fled to Switzerland through Germany. He became one of the first witnesses who delivered news of the Holocaust in Latvia to the West: on October 29, 1942, he gave evidence of the extermination of Latvian Jews to the US Consul in Geneva [1] . After the war, the future writer returned to Latvia.
He is the author of books on the revolutionary and anti-fascist movement, adventure and detective novels. Among his works are widely known such as "Comrade Mauser", "Apartment without a number" and others. In 1967 - 1986 - Secretary of the Writers' Union of the Latvian SSR.
He died on October 25, 2002. He was buried at the Lielupsky cemetery of Jurmala . His son Yuri Tsivian is a director, professor at the University of Chicago. [2]
