Francis John William Harvey ( born Francis John William Harvey ; April 29, 1873 , Sydenham Kent - May 31, 1916 , battlecruiser Lyon , North Sea ) - Major of the Royal Royal Marine Corps , posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for actions during the battle of Jutland . During the battle, Harvey, who was on the battlecruiser Lion, being mortally wounded, managed to order the urgent flooding of the main caliber cellars under the Q tower, which prevented the explosion of hundreds of tons of cordite . The explosion of the cellars could lead to the complete destruction of the ship and all those on board. Harvey died of his wounds a few seconds after giving the order.
