The construction of the lighthouse began in 1874, two years after Congress and President Grant allocated funds (75 thousand dollars ) and was completed the next year . The building was built in Victorian style . The lighthouse tower is an octagonal structure, tapering upwards, 20 m high . Nearby is a two-story loft building with attic . From the beginning of operation until 1929, Fresnel lenses were used at the lighthouse. [3] In 1929 - 1990 , green light was used, which was visible for 35 km . Fresnel lenses previously used are stored in the museum at the lighthouse, which is available for visiting in the summer .
