Massachusetts is an Indian tribe that lived in North America on the territory of the modern American state of Massachusetts and gave this state its name. Refers to Algonkin peoples . Currently, only a small number of Indians of this tribe remain. They spoke the Massachusetts language related to Algonkin languages .

The name translates as “people living on a large hill”, which according to legend goes back to the Blue Hills near Boston . Historically engaged in fishing and farming .
They lived in the center of the coastal part of modern Massachusetts, in the area where the city of Boston was founded.
Most of the Massachusetts were destroyed during the XVII century with the beginning of the colonization of their ancestral lands by the British . In 1616 - 1619, the tribe was severely affected by the plague brought to America by the British, and in 1623 a significant part of the rest was expelled from the ancestral lands by a group of colonialists led by Captain Miles Standish because of the danger of an uprising prepared by the leaders of the tribe. In the 1630s, the lands of Massachusetts were settled by about twenty thousand immigrants from England. Nevertheless, despite the fact that the number of mass meetings was significantly reduced, they took part in the War of King Philip in 1675 - 1676 .
The Massachusetts were converted to Christianity by a Puritan missionary John Eliot .
In 1869, Massachusetts passed an act according to which members of the tribe became US citizens. At the moment, there are two not numerous Massachusetts communities - one lives in Natike and the other in Brockton (both cities are in Massachusetts ).
