Jan Geleta began his football career with the Iskra youth team from Partizansk, then played for the first team. In 1962, he transferred to the Prague Dukla , in which he played until 1976. With Dukla, Geleta won 3 championships in Czechoslovakia and won the Czechoslovak Cup 3 times. He played 283 matches, scoring 27 goals in them. In 1967 he was chosen as the Czechoslovak footballer of the year. From 1977 to 1979, he played for the Prague Motorlet, where he completed his football career. Later he worked as a youth coach at the Dukla club.

From 1964 to 1970, Geleta played for the Czechoslovak team , having played 19 matches and scoring 2 goals. He also participated in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, where he won a silver medal.
