Fort Knox ( English Fort Knox ) - a fort on the west bank of the River Penobscot , located 8 km from the mouth , since 1970 - a national historical monument . [1] Built in 1844–1869 , the fort was the first to be built of granite , rather than wood , in the territory of Maine . Granite was mined on Mount Waldo , 7 km from the construction site.
The name of the fort was in honor of Henry Knox .
Today, Fort Knox is located on the park in Prospect .
