History
For the first time, the leader (RRA) , March 31, 2002, declared Southwestern Somalia (as part of the Bay and Bakol provinces) an autonomous state. The RPA at that time controlled a substantial portion of the above provinces and was reportedly supported by Ethiopia , which was hostile to the Transitional Federal Government [2] .
On February 10, 2006, this unrecognized state died under the pressure of the Union of Islamic Courts during a conflict with the interim government of Somalia at the beginning of the Somali War . Soon, in December 2006, the ICU itself fell under the onslaught of the forces of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia and the Ethiopian army , but the Islamist organization Harakat al-Shabab , formed after its collapse, continues with varying success in the region, including in southwestern Somalia , military operations of varying intensity (in 2014, mainly partisan) to this day.
2014
On March 16, 2014, officials from South-West Somalia, Jubaland and the Federal Government of Somalia signed an agreement according to which the newly created South-West Somalia, already comprising three provinces (including the densely populated Lower Shabelle bordering Mogadishu ), received the status of an autonomous state subordinate to the Provisional federal constitution [3] .
On November 7, 2014, the state of Southwestern Somalia with its capital in the city of Barava was officially proclaimed. [4] The constitution of the region was also approved. [5] .
