OBITUARY

Literary newspaper number 46 of November 12, 1969

Great grief befell everyone who knew, and therefore loved Alexander Yulianovich Narkevich. Untimely death in the prime of mind and talent stopped the heart, devoted to people and science.

I remember when he was still a boy, he came to one of us, sat down in front of a bookcase and plunged into reading. Since his childhood, his amazing memory absorbed Dates, names, terms, theories, biographies, events, publications of works ... He was a bibliographer by nature, by thinking. And he was a wonderful bibliographer, because the book is a thought, and the thought in its movement, in contradiction, was his passion, his main joy in life. The beauty of chess and mathematics, the wit of detectives and scientific research, the subtlety of psychological analysis, the boldness of physical hypotheses, the struggle of philosophical schools — everything found in it a worried observer, a careful qualifier and a loving guardian. He was a man of encyclopedic education, his work always amazed with the abundance of materials, breadth of erudition, accuracy, sharpness of thought. Scattered over different editions, they could make a living and useful book. And he generously gave all his wealth to people, never thinking about reward. He always found time and energy for creative assistance to others - with his vast knowledge, his work, thorough and inspirational.

We lost a person who was needed by literature.

Farewell, dear friend, assistant, critic, researcher, impartial adviser in our beautiful and difficult business.
