The cathedral building was designed by architect Patrick Keely in a pseudo - Gothic style. Back in 1860, the Bishop of Boston Fitzpatrick spoke about the need to build a new cathedral for the local diocese, but the Civil War prevented this from happening soon. Fitzpatrick died in 1866 , and his successor Bishop Williams decided to complete the plans of his predecessor. Construction began on April 29, 1866 , in 1875 John Williams was ordained to the new rank , becoming the first archbishop of Boston [2] .
On October 1, 1979, Pope John Paul II held a 38-minute mass in the cathedral, in which about 2,000 priests participated [3] .
The Cathedral has its own high school in Boston and the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester [4] .
Initially, the plan was to install a spire on the western tower , which has not been built to date . The height of the Cathedral is 36 m .
