General Information

Alize is one of the two children of Patricia and Francis Cornet; her brother's name is Sebastian.

The Frenchwoman first took the racket in her hands at four years old, after a period of observing her brother’s tennis section.

On the court, Alize prefers to act at the back line. The best hit is the backhand, your favorite cover is the ground.

Sports career

Junior years.

Cornet at the French Junior Open 2005

Alize from a young age has established itself as a very qualified tennis player. In senior junior age, the flowering of her results began shortly after her 16th birthday: in January 2006, she reached the finals of the Australian Grand Slam tournament, followed by a good series of tournaments in Brazil (having played twice in single finals and simultaneously doubled in single semi-finals) , then reached the quarterfinal of the Grand Slam home tournament , simultaneously defeating one of the leaders of the then senior junior age - the Danish Carolina Wozniacki . In July of the same year, Alize became the European doubles champion, together with Julia Fedosova, beating Alexander Panov and Evgeny Rodin in the Swiss Championship finals. In singles, Cornet stumbled in the semifinals.

In 2007, the Frenchwoman twice tried to win the Junior Grand Slam tournament. In Australia, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova prevented her from beating Alize in the semifinals and then winning the title, and Cornet had no competitors on home courts: after giving only two sets to her rivals in six matches, she became the first Frenchwoman to win Roland Garros in seven years in seven years. Shortly after that tournament, Alize completed her junior career and completely switched to adult tennis.

The beginning of an adult career.

Since 2004, Alize has been playing in adult competitions, receiving special invitations to various ITF competitions . A year later, Korney was entrusted to play the Grand Slam series at the home tournament, immediately giving her a place at the base: a native of Nice justified the confidence of the federation by defeating Alina Zhidkova, 71st racket in the first round. In the second round, she was waiting for a test in the face of one of the leaders of the then national tennis: Amelie Moresmo . Cornet could not adequately resist a much more experienced rival, taking only two games from that one. Until the end of the 2005 season, Alize, due to several local successes in small competitions, rises in the ranking at the very beginning of the fourth hundred.

In 2006, the progressive upward movement of the rating continued: in January, the Federation gives Korn the opportunity to play at the base of the Australian Open, where she lost to Aiko Nakamura in the first round in three sets. In April, Alize wins his first adult single title, beating two Top 100 players on his way to victory on the 25-thousand-strong in Bari . In June, the Frenchwoman again played in the second round of Roland Garros (this time outplaying Virginia Ruano Pasqual ). In July, Cornet won the title and reached the final in two 25 thousandths in Italy. The last title match allows her to rise to the Top 200 at 16.5.

In 2007, the results continued to grow: in Australia, she already made her way through qualifications to the basis of the local Grand Slam tournament, knocking out the first seeded tournament in the first round of selection Katerina Bondarenko . At the junction of February and March at the tournament in Acapulco Korn, which began with qualification, it is possible to beat Severin Beltram , who was at that time in the Top 40 singles classification and reach the first quarterfinal of the round. In May, she repeated this achievement at the Fez dirt tournament. In the summer, Alize made her debut at the adult Wimbledon : in the selection, the Frenchwoman reaches the finals, where she gives way in a tense match to Olga Govortsova . A little later, this defeat turns out to be a victory: after removing one of the players in the main net, Korne got a “lacquer” place and successfully uses it, defeating Maria Kirilenko in the first round. The path to the third round failed again - this time Ai Sugiyama gets in her way.

Until the end of summer, Alize holds several ITF unpaved tournaments , each of which reaches at least the quarter-finals, and won at all in the 50,000th tournament in Dnepropetrovsk . Points scored here allow you to come to the US Open already as a top 100 player. This fact, however, still did not eliminate the need to pass qualifying competitions. Corne confidently overcame three qualification rounds, and then two more rounds of the foundation, and only in the third round lost in a tense struggle to Elena Yankovich , who at that time was the third racket of the world. Soon after the American Grand Slam tournament, the Frenchwoman played in the home 100 thousandth in Bordeaux , where she managed to reach the finals, beating Emily Lua and losing in the title match to Tsvetana Pironkova .

2008-09. The first WTA title and hit the Top 20.

Cornet at Roland Garros 2008

At the start of the season, Alize reached the 2nd round of the Australian Open, losing to the 9th seeded and future tournament semifinalist Daniele Gantuhova . In February, she made her debut with Romania in the Federation Cup . The start of the unpaved part of the season was marked for the Frenchwoman by the tournament finals in Acapulco and the semi-finals of the tournaments in Amelia Island and Charleston . In May, Cornet first reached the final of the 1st category tournament (in Rome ), where she lost to Elena Yankovich - 2-6, 2-6, which allowed her to get into the Top 30 of the WTA rating. During the tournament, Alize won her first victory over tennis players from the top ten (No. 5 Svetlana Kuznetsova and No. 8 Anna Chakvetadze ). After performing in Rome, the Frenchwoman climbed into the Top 20 of the world ranking. On the courts of Roland Garros, she got to the 3rd round.

In July, at a tournament in Budapest, Korn first won the singles and doubles as part of the WTA tour. In the singles final, she beat Slovenian Andrey Klepach , and in pairs she won the main prize in a duet with Jeanette Gusarova . In August, she made her debut at the Olympics , where she, having sown the 15th, went through 2 rounds and lost in the 3rd Serena Williams - 6-3, 3-6, 4-6. Preparations for the US Open ended for Cornet at a tournament in New Haven . At the same American Grand Slam tournament, she got to the 3rd round. Out of the results of the end of the season, the best for Cornet was to reach the quarter finals in Linz . She finished the 2008 season in 16th place.

Cornet began the year 2009 with a performance at the unofficially team tournament of the Hopman Cup , where the French team took third place in their group. Then at the tournament in Sydney she reached the quarter-finals. At the Australian Open, Alize was able to qualify for the fourth round, where she lost to Dinara Safina for the third time since the start of the season. In February, she, in the rank of the 1st racket of France, played for the national team in 1/4 of the Federation Cup . The games failed - the Italians won all 5 matches, causing the French women a sensitive home defeat, and of those 3 matches that somehow influenced the result, 2 were entrusted to Alize. In the course of the season, tournaments were played on hard in Paris (quarterfinal, defeat in three sets from the third racket of the world E. Jankovic ) and Dubai (third round, defeat from future winner of the tournament Venus Williams ). On the eve of the tournament in Dubai, Alize rose to the highest in her career - 11th - in the world ranking. Then went a certain kind of failure in the results - for 12 tournaments in the segment of Indian Wells - Palermo won only 4 victories. Against this background, the semifinal at the weak tournament in Bad Gastein looked quite a good result. The year, however, ended in the same vein - Alize still lost in the first or second round and completed his fiftieth in a single rating.

2010-12.

Cornet at the 2011 Grapevine Tournament

After the quarter-finals in Auckland at the start of the 2010 season, Alize again continued with a series of early defeats and all went lower in the ranking. By February, it was already hard to get into the Top 90. In March, the Frenchwoman marked herself in the quarter finals in Monterrey , after which she again continued a series of inconclusive results and already in April she was forced to play the qualification for the tournament in Barcelona (and a year ago she was first seeded here). Soon Alize made her way to the semifinals for the first time in a long time - at the tournament in Fez, she was stopped by the future winner of the tournament, Iveta Beneshova .

Against the backdrop of failures in single-player tournaments, something began to be paired up - in the same Fez, the duet Kuen / Cornet reached the semifinals, and then (already paired with Vanya King ) the Frenchwoman won the tournament in Strasbourg . Further, Alize was only a couple of times noted in the semifinals, but, nevertheless, entrenched in the ranking in the middle of the ninth dozen doubles rating. In singles, the number of matches won at some point fell so much that after the US Open Alize immediately went to Europe to gain rating points at ITF unpaved tournaments. There, too, it didn’t work out right away, but the semi-finals in Sofia and the finals in Saint-Malo allowed Alize to slightly stabilize her rating position.

The best results at the start of the 2011 season were exits in the third round of the Australian championship and at the tournament in Indian Wells . By the end of the season, Cornet began to play a large number of ITF tournaments, after the US Open only once glancing at tournaments WTA-tour. Against the backdrop of the decline in singles results, successful doubles tournaments began to turn out more and more often: Alize played three times in the WTA tournament semifinals and made her way to the final once in Grapevine , and at the end of the year she won the big ITF tournament in Poitiers (along with Virginie Razzano ).

The start of the 2012 season was not carried out in the best way, but then Alize gradually gained the necessary confidence, began to lose less and less in the opening matches. In March, she reached the finals of the 100,000th ITF in Nassau . In May, Cornet reached the finals of the WTA tournament in Strasbourg, losing to Francesca Schiavon (4-6, 4-6). In June, Korne was able to win the second WTA title of her career alone, taking it on the ground in Bad Gastein. In the final, she was stronger than Ioannina Wikmeier - 7-5, 7-6 (1). In August, at the London Olympics, Alize lost in the second round in singles and in the first round in pairs. Local successes in various competitions allowed her to return to the Top 50 by the end of the year. In the doubles that season, Korne reached the two semifinals of the WTA tournaments and won the 100 thousandth in Prague .

2013-15.

Cornet at the 2014 Rome Tournament

2013 at first passed without much success - the Frenchwoman often lost already in the 1-2 match of the tournament and began to gain at least some positive stability in the results only in the spring, when she first reached the semi-finals in Acapulco, and then reached the fourth round of a major tournament in Miami . Then, already during a series of competitions in Europe, Alize helped her team not to fly to the regional zone of the Federation Cup (having won one of her matches in a meeting against Kazakhstan ). In April, she scored in the quarterfinal of the prize in Marrakesh , and in May she won her third WTA title by herself, defeating Lucia Gradecka (7-6 (4), 6-0) in the decisive match in Strasbourg. The rest of the year was played without much success, but just three trips to the third rounds at the Grand Slam tournaments and the prize semifinal in Washington allowed the Frenchwoman to qualify for the WTA Champions Tournament and finish the season in the Top 30 for the first time in five years.

The beginning of the 2014 season brought Cornet the first major victory in the games for France: together with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Alize, she won the Hopman team cup, having won all matches in the mixed doubles. Performances at personal tournaments were also held at a fairly high level: in February, the Frenchwoman scored in the semifinals of the tournament in Paris and reached the finals at similar competitions in Dubai , having also beaten the first racket of the world in the semifinals to Serena Williams (6-4, 6-4) . In April, she won the tournament prize in Katowice , defeating Agnieszka Radwanska (0-6, 6-2, 6-4), the local favorite and number 3 in the world, in the semi-finals, and in the finals she defeated Camila Georgi (7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-5). Further, Korne noticeably slowed down her results for several months, again reaching the peak only to Wimbledon , where Alize made her way to the fourth round, having outplayed the leader of the seeding Serena Williams again on the way (1-6, 6-3, 6-4). Then the recession continued and only in the fall the French woman began to regularly win matches in protest: reaching the third round at the US Open, playing in two finals in Guangzhou and reaching the quarter finals in Wuhan , where she managed to beat the first racket of the world for the third time in a season Serena Williams (this time on the opponent’s refusal in the first set).

2015, Alize Cornet began the Hopman Cup tournament and won all three matches alone and two out of three in the mixed, but the French team could not leave the group. At the Australian Open, she finished the game until the third round. She reached the first quarterfinal of the season in April at a tournament in Katowice. At the French Open, Alize entered the fourth round, losing to Elina Svitolina at this stage. It was only in October that she played in the quarter finals for the second time this season, reaching this stage at a tournament in Hong Kong . There she was able to win a double trophy, having won it in a duet with Yaroslav Shvedova

2016-18.

At the start of the 2016 season, Cornet was able to win the tournament in Hobart and win her fifth single title in the WTA tour. In the final, she was stronger than Eugenie Bouchard - 6-1, 6-2. Cornet's further results during the season were worse. Only at the end of May at Roland Garros she was able to win two matches in a row and go to the third round. She achieved the same result at Wimbledon. In August, at the Olympic tournament in Rio de Janeiro, the French tennis player lost in the second round to Serena Williams. In the fall, the quarterfinal in Hong Kong was the best result on the tour. Korne also performed in the final for the Federation Cup against the Czech team . She lost her only match to Barbora Strytsova and the French as a whole lost the match with a score of 2-3.

In January 2017, Cornet played in the tournament finals at the International Tennis Tournament in Brisbane, following the path of two tennis players from the Top 10 ( Dominica Tsibulkova and Garbinho Mugurus ). In the final, she lost to Karolina Plishkova - 0-6, 3-6. In April, Alize reached the quarterfinals in Monterrey. At Roland Garros, she was able to reach the fourth round. In August, in a duet with Alice Rosolskaya, she reached the pair finals of the tournament at Stanford . In September, she went to the quarter finals twice at tournaments in Guangzhou and Wuhan, and in October reached the same stage in Moscow .

Cornet began the 2018 season with the quarter finals in Brisbane. At the Australian Open, she reached the third round. In April, the 28-year-old Frenchwoman reached the quarter finals at a tournament in Charleston. In July, Korne was able to win on the ground in Gstaad , beating Mandy Minella in the decisive match - 6-4, 7-6 (6).

2019 year.

At the start of the 2019 season, Cornet was able to reach the semifinal of the tournament in Hobart. The next time she was able to overcome the first rounds already in June at a tournament in Eastbourne , where she reached the quarter-finals.

Scandals

In 2018, in the first round of the US Open tennis championship, Alize became the heroine of the scandal that led to a change in sports rules. Her first match in the tournament was held in thirty-eight-degree heat. In the interval between the second and third sets, the athlete retired to the locker room to change clothes. Then, going to the court and finding that she had put on a T-shirt inside out, Alize took it off (a red bra was put on under the T-shirt), turned it around and put it on correctly. The tower judge warned her that she had violated the rules of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). The rules said that women on US Open cannot dress on the court and must retire to the locker room for this. Kornet lost to the opponent in all three sets, but the incident with dressing up and warning attracted more attention than the sports outcome of the match [2] .

Many tennis players criticized this decision, as a result of the scandal was the abolition of the controversial rule. WTA executives said that Alize Cornet was undeservedly received a warning and will not be punished. [2] .
