Story

Three students, Americans Paxton and Josh and Icelander Oli, travel across Europe in search of parties and sexual entertainment. In Amsterdam , at one of these parties, he comes across a Russian named Alexei who invites children to visit a hostel full of sexy girls located in Slovakia, near Bratislava . The next day, the trinity gets on the train. Later, a Dutch businessman sits down in a compartment to them, whose bizarre behavior is somewhat alarming for the guys, especially Josh.

They settle in the hostel in the village, immediately settle in the neighborhood with two girls - Natalya and Svetlana. They invite the guys to go to a disco, where Josh becomes uncomfortable with tobacco smoke (he has asthma, which he hides) and goes out into the street. There, a crowd of local boys will attack him, but he is saved by a Dutch businessman. Later that night, Natalya and Svetlana have sex with Paxton and Josh. The next day, Paxton and Josh learn from the receptionist that Olya has left. And from the Japanese tourist Kana, who also lives in the hotel, that her friend Yuki disappeared. Offended by Olya, friends walk around the city and suddenly see their friend entering the Museum of Torture. Following him, the guys understand that this is someone else. To the question “Where did you get this jacket from?” The stranger answers with rudeness and runs away. Paxton doubts that in Slovakia anyone else can wear a jacket with the symbols of Iceland. Suddenly, a message arrives on Josh’s phone with a photo of Olya and the text: “I'm going home.” The guys are finally disappointed in his behavior and decide to leave the city. The camera shows that Olya’s head is cut off and is standing on the table, while someone in a butcher’s clothes is slowly moving through the corridor to the screaming Japanese girl, Yuki. He takes the wire cutters for the fittings and pinches the second toe of Yuuki in them, crushing him. That very evening Paxton offers to leave with them and Canet. The girl agrees and promises to wait for him in the lobby in the morning. In the evening, having sorted out alcohol at a disco, Josh hardly returns to his room and falls asleep. Paxton stays with the girls, but some time later they stop paying attention to him. Josh becomes ill, he enters the pantry, where one of the employees accidentally locks him.

Josh wakes up tied to a chair in the basement, where various instruments lie on the table. A man in a butcher's suit and a surgical mask begins to mock Josh - he drills his shoulders and knees with a drill , and then takes off his mask. It turns out to be a Dutch businessman. He says that he always dreamed of being a surgeon, but because of Parkinson's disease, he had to start a business, which soon bothered him. Josh begs him to let go. The businessman cuts the tendons on his legs and unties him from the chair. Josh tries to crawl away, but the Dutchman pulls him to the mirror and cuts his throat.

Paxton wakes up and returns to the hotel. He learns from the administrator that he, Josh, and Kana signed out yesterday. Returning to his room, he sees how other girls already live in it and in exactly the same words as Natalia and Svetlana call him to the sauna. Paxton goes to the police and talks about what happened. He is asked to wait and not be nervous. While walking around the city, Paxton accidentally stumbles upon Svetlana, who enters a local bar. There he finds Natalya. The girls are drunk, disheveled and untidy. Natalya says his friends are on an "art show." The driver takes Paxton and Natalia to an abandoned factory, where people scurry around, there are a lot of foreign cars in the parking lot. Natalia leads Paxton to a room inside the factory, where a Dutch businessman shreds Josh's corpse. Two guards grab Paxton and drag him across the corridor. Paxton notices that in all rooms people are tortured. Paxton is also handcuffed to a chair where a man in a butcher costume begins to torture him. He cuts two fingers off Paxton with a chainsaw, also sawing it and handcuffs, but then slips on the blood, and a chainsaw falling on him saws off his leg. Paxton finds a gun and kills the maniac and the guard. In the locker room, he disguises himself in an expensive suit and finds a business card in his pocket, from which it becomes clear that this is an "Elite Club" in which you can order a victim of any nationality for bullying (5 thousand for a Russian, 10 thousand for a European, and an American for 25 thousand dollars). Paxton notices that the chief of police has approached the building and realizes that he is with them. Having reached the car, Paxton hears the girl's screams in Japanese and realizes that this is Kana. Having reached the room and killing her tormentor, Paxton is forced to cut off her eye, which fell out of the eye socket. He is Kanu to the Volga and they, having got rid of the Tatra chasing them with the help of a gang of street children, as well as knocking Natalia, Svetlana and Alexei down the road, manage to get to the station. Passing by the window, Kana sees her reflection and falls into apathy. Paxton sits behind the drawers and only tries to attract her attention. However, the girl rushes under a passing locomotive. While everyone is looking at her corpse, Paxton manages to get into the train.

Sitting at the window, Paxton hears the familiar voice of a Dutch businessman. The train arrives in Austria. Paxton follows him into the public toilet and hangs a “Closed” sign on the door. Sitting on the toilet, the businessman sees on the floor a visiting card of the Elite Hunt. When he wants to lift it, Paxton grabs one by the hand and cuts off two fingers with a scalpel. Then he knocks out the door and begins to stoke the businessman. Paxton raises his head from the toilet. The Dutchman sees in reflection on the wall his tormentor and prays for mercy, but Paxton cuts his throat. Throwing a scalpel, he runs away from the toilet.

Filming

All the work on the film, from the development of the script to the release of the picture in hire, was completed in 12 months. According to the initial scenario, in the final, Paxton had to brutally crack down on the daughter of a Dutch businessman, leaving him to sob over his body right at the station. However, such a finale seemed too cruel to the producers.

The role of Olya was written by Eli Roth specifically for Eitor Goodyonsson after a meeting at a press conference as part of an advertising campaign " Fever " in Iceland in 2002. The mouth was so impressed with the Icelander’s charisma that he promised him a role in one of his future paintings. Eitor accepted the news with skepticism, but when Roth contacted him and invited him to one of the key roles in the Hostel, he immediately agreed. Subsequently, Eli Roth formally apologized to the President of Iceland for introducing Icelander Oli as a sexual maniac and alcoholic in his picture. In response, the president only laughed and said that in this light the inhabitants of his country had never been shown in films. Roth also apologized to the Minister of Culture of Iceland, believing that his picture could inflict a serious blow on the country's reputation. In turn, in Slovakia, many negatively perceived the film, where their country was portrayed as an uncivilized and criminal place [1] .

All the street scenes of the film were shot not in Bratislava , but in the Czech towns of Cesky Krumlov and Milovice (at that time the abandoned dilapidated former Soviet military town, the former headquarters of the Central Army ). In addition, some scenes of the picture were shot in the existing hospital for the mentally ill in Prague-Bognica [2] , built in 1910, in a wing that has been closed for more than 50 years. Most of the scenes were shot in the so-called building number 10, which contained the wildest patients. The place was so creepy that Eli Roth invited a string quartet to shoot - Vivaldi's music helped filmmakers overcome animal fear in this creepy place.

In the production of the painting, about 150 gallons of blood were used. This is about 3 times more than was used in Roth’s previous film “Fever”.

As the representatives of the gang "Bubble Gum" ordinary children from the street were involved.

Rick Hoffman, who played the role of an American businessman, seriously injured his head and earned a concussion during the filming of a scene during which his character decides to kill his victim in this way. [3]

Premiere and rental

Eli Roth presented the film at the Icelandic Film Festival in 2005. During the film festival, Roth and Quentin Tarantino were converted [ specify ] in the Vikings during a ceremony organized by Eitor Gudionsson. Each of them received their Icelandic names: Roth became Eli Sheldonsson, and Nfhfynjyj - Quentin Connisson. [3]

In the United States, the film raised $ 47,326,473, of which $ 19,556,099 was rolled out for the first weekend. In other countries, 32,880,443 were collected, which totaled 80,206,916.

Criticism

Film critic Sergei Kudryavtsev defined the genre of the film as a youth horror film , distinguished by its impudence and shamelessness and openly speculating on base human passions. After watching this film, Kudryavtsev states that "I really want to catch and torture his author for a long time, even paying a lot of money for it."

Roman Volobuev in the Afisha magazine spoke positively of the film: “Where an ordinary horror tries to jump from the back or slap a paper bag over his ear, the Hostel takes our hand and calmly leads us - perhaps something is losing in the sense of spectacular surprises but winning in clarity and clarity ” [4] .
