Simborio Cathedral - one of the most luxurious lantern towers of its time in Spain

It was founded in 1221 as the main attraction of the kingdom of Castile . The construction was completed in the XV — XVI centuries with the addition of spiers of the facade and chapel. The cathedral is the most striking monument of Spanish Gothic . Its giant arcade has become an attribute of temples in the Hispanic world (especially in South America).

The construction of the cathedral began on July 20, 1221 by decree of King Castile Ferdinand III on the site of the former Romanesque cathedral. The altar was consecrated in 1260, after which construction work was not carried out for 200 years. The completion of the cathedral dates back to 1567 , when the spire over the main ceiling was completed. The main facade of the cathedral, most of which was built in the 13th century, is oriented to the west and is dedicated to the Mother of God. The most ancient facade is the south (1230s), in a sculptural form it depicts Christ surrounded by apostles and angels. Oriental apse were built during the Renaissance (in the XV-XVI centuries). In one of them is the Chapel of the Connables, where Velasco and his descendants are buried.

In 1919, the Spanish national hero Cid Campeador and his wife, Donja Jimena, were buried in the cathedral. Here, since 2007, Tysona has been located - a sword allegedly belonging to Sid. In 1984, the cathedral was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

In 2012, a commemorative coin with a face value of 2 euros was issued with a circulation of 8 million copies depicting the Cathedral of Burgos [3] .
