Friedrich Hirth ( German: Friedrich Hirth , Chinese夏德, Pinyin Xià Dé; April 16, 1845 , Grafenton , Saxe-Gotha - January 10, 1927 , Munich ) is a German-American sinologist , historian, one of the founders of U.S. synology. He studied at the universities of Leipzig and Berlin . He was awarded his doctorate in 1869 at the University of Greifswald . In 1870-1897 served at Shanghai Maritime Customs. In 1902 he was invited to the newly opened Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Columbia University (New York). In 1920, Kang Yuwei negotiated with him on the complete translation and publication in English of the Da Tung Shu treatise. After the resignation he returned to Germany. Hirth bequeathed his book collection to the Berlin Library ; after World War II, it ended up in Krakow . [four]
