Club career
Eric began his career at Fortuna Club from Sittard and became widely known for his appearances for MVV in the first half of the 1990s. Then he moved to PSV , but could not gain a foothold in the main squad, in the attack of which Ronaldo , Luk Nilis and Wim Kift then played.
In 1995, he moved to the German club Erdingen 05 , in which he managed to shine again. Soon Eric moved to Leverkusen Bayer 04 , where he composed a duet of forwards with Ulf Kirsten . The pair of these strikers was one of the most dangerous in the Bundesliga of that time.
In 1999, on the threshold of his thirtieth birthday, Eric, as a free agent, moved to Liverpool Gerard Houllier , who then needed a tall forward to use his preferred construction scheme. Meyer lost in many game qualities to the two main Liverpool strikers of that time, Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler , but he was focused on winning in any development of the match and never refused to fight in the most hopeless situations, which was transmitted to his partners around him. For this, Erica, who rarely managed to break into the roster, was very fond of the Reds fans, who gave him the nickname Mad Erik .
Eric was leased to the Preston North End club in 2000 before the end of the season , and in December of that year returned to Germany by signing a contract with Hamburg . In 2001, Meyer came to Dortmund to support Liverpool in the UEFA Cup final . He met with the club's fans, drank and sang with them as if he were one of those who come to Anfield every week.
Eric achieved the greatest success already at sunset of his career, moving to the Alemania club from the Second Bundesliga , which he soon reached the final of the German Cup . Although in a decisive match his team lost to Bremen “ Werder Bremen ”, however “Alemania” still got the right to participate in the UEFA Cup for next year, as “Werder Bremen” also became the German champion that season. This success allowed the Meyer team to receive serious financial support (due to the prize money and fees from participating in the UEFA Cup). Meyer became the team captain (for the first time in the years of his career!) And, following the 2005/06 season, returned Alemania to the Bundesliga , which she had left for the last time 36 years before.
That same summer, Eric Meyer announced his retirement, saying that he would like to finish it on a major note. He entered the club’s coaching staff and for some time (since September 2006) he was even an assistant to the head coach.
Eric, along with Vegard Heggam and John Aldridge, is the patron of the semi-professional club LFC Liverpool , which was created by Liverpool fans as an alternative for those Red fans who cannot afford to attend matches at Anfield weekly. In the 2008/09 season, this team plays in the First Division of the Northwest Counties League (10th level of the championship of England ).
International Career
Eric played one match for the first Dutch national team in 1993.
