Designed by OKB. A. S. Yakovleva in the mid-70s. The prototype of the Yak-44 (Yak-44RLD) aircraft was selected American E-2 "Hokai . " The aircraft was supposed to be based on the atomic aircraft carrier of project 1143.7 Ulyanovsk .
Due to difficulties in developing on-board equipment , only the Yak-44 was built.
In 1993, work was frozen due to lack of funding.

Design
The Yak-44 is built according to the aerodynamic scheme of a free - standing high-wing with a two-keel plumage. Semi- monocoque fuselage of circular cross section. The wing is trapezoidal in plan, with mechanization along the entire trailing edge. Folding wing consoles . To reduce the inductive resistance, end wings are installed.
Retractable landing gear , tricycle, with nose strut.
The power plant consists of 2 fan engines (the only ones in the world in this class) D-27 .
The radar antenna is located on the pylon above the fuselage, in a rotating fairing . The Yak-44 radar complex was supposed to simultaneously track up to 1300 targets, aim at 120 ground and 160 air targets.
