Biography
Born in Bangkok in the family of Samien and Umphan Suntharavet.
He graduated from the College of Commerce and the University of Thammasat , also received a diploma from the University of Chulalongkor and Bryant & Stratton College en .
In 1968, Samak joined the opposition Democratic Party of Thailand , of which he remained a member until 1976. In it, he led the right-wing faction, who was accused of trying to deliberately split the party. These suspicions intensified when in 1976 Samak Suntharavet became Deputy Minister of the Interior. During this period, several activists of the far left wing of the party were arrested. He was also accused of complicity in the brutal suppression of student unrest in 1976, directed against the return to the country of Marshal Tanom Kittikachon .
He was repeatedly elected a member of parliament (1973-1975, 1976, 1979-1983, 1986-1990, 1992-2000, 2008).
In 1975-1976 - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperation.

In 2006, he was elected senator.
After the victory of the “People's Force” in the 2007 parliamentary elections, Samak becomes the Prime Minister of Thailand.
He was elected prime minister after the victory of his party in the parliamentary elections, replacing the head of the interim military government Surayut Chulanon .
September 2 Suntharavet in the midst of an acute social crisis, introduced a state of emergency in the country. On September 9, the Thai Constitutional Court ruled that it was impossible for Suntharavet to continue as prime minister on the basis of illegally paid participation in a television show [2] . The post of Prime Minister was transferred to First Deputy Prime Minister Somchay Wongsavat .
