Biography

Born into the family of Vyacheslav Stepanovich Ossovsky ( real state adviser , served as chairman of the department in the court of Odessa ) and Evgenia Nikiforovna (nee Cherkunova). He was a cousin of N. N. Vilinsky and K. G. Derzhinsky [1] .

He graduated from the law faculty of Moscow University (1893). After graduation, he served in the Ministry of Justice in St. Petersburg.

In 1896-1898 he studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory ; in 1900-1902 he was engaged in composition with N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov . Visiting the musical "environment" of the Korsakovs and working closely with members of the so-called " Belyaevsky circle ", Ossovsky made friends with many prominent musicians and participated in the concert programs of A. I. Ziloti . Beginning in 1894, Ossovsky declared himself as a talented, extraordinary and prolific music critic and musicologist: he made his debut in the Russian Musical Newspaper and the Artist magazine; It was published in the Izvestia of the St. Petersburg Society of Musical Assemblies, the Slovo newspaper, and the Apollon magazine (Ossovsky owns the pseudonym O.V-v).

A. V. Ossovsky is a contemporary and friend of S. V. Rachmaninov , about whom he left unique memories.

Using his authority in musical circles, Ossovsky helped talented young musicians. In 1911, he wrote a letter to the publisher B.P. Jurgenson in support of the aspiring composer Sergei Prokofiev , with whom, as a result, Jurgenson signed a contract. Also at the request of Ossovsky in 1911, Rachmaninov listened to the young singer Ksenia Derzhinsky , which played a significant role in the formation of her opera career.

A. V. Ossovsky was one of the organizers and editor-in-chief of the journal Musical Contemporary (1915-1917). In the pre-revolutionary years, he served on the editorial board of the Russian Music Publishing House , contributing to the publications of contemporary Russian composers.

In 1915-1918 he lectured at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 1918-1921 he lived and worked in Odessa and Kiev in connection with the situation in Petrograd after the revolution and during the civil war . Then he returned to Petrograd. In 1921-1923 he taught at [St. Petersburg University | Petrograd University]], in 1921-1952 he was a professor at the Leningrad Conservatory (he taught a course in the history of music). From 1937, he was deputy director for science, and from 1943-1952, he was director of the Leningrad Research Institute of Theater and Music. In the years 1923-1925. - Director, and in 1933-1936 - artistic director of the Leningrad Philharmonic . In 1931-1933 he worked in the Hermitage .

Ossovsky is known as a deep researcher of Russian musical aesthetics of the 18th century , the works of M. I. Glinka , A. K. Glazunov , N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. One of the first in Russia to illuminate the works of I.S. Bach , A. Vivaldi , A. Corelli , J. F. Rameau , also published a number of articles on Wagner music in Russia and other music-critical articles. Among the musical compositions of Ossovsky are romances and arrangements of works by Berlioz and Gounod .

Ossovsky died on July 31, 1957, and was buried on Literatorny bridges in St. Petersburg . A book about his life and work was published in 1960 by his student E.F. Bronfin .
