Drum (mechanism)

Drum - the general name of the rotating parts of the machine, having the form of a hollow cylinder (sometimes a cone).

Drums in working machines

In working machines, drums of periodic or continuous action are used using an internal cavity to communicate the relative movement of products - treatment, drying, washing, etc.

  • Cleaning drums are used to remove molding ground and burrs from castings.
  • Drying drums are used to dry bulk materials, as well as textiles after wet processing.
  • Washing drums are used in leather and fur production and are one of the main devices for processing leather raw materials and furs. They are made in the form of cylindrical vessels rotating around the horizontal axis of the drive. Such drums are: recessed, in which the outer walls are frame, lattice or mesh, and the drum itself is in a tub filled with working fluid; suspended, in which the working fluid and the processed semi-finished product are placed inside a hermetically sealed rotating vessel suspended on supports above the floor.

Drums in hoisting machines

In hoisting-and-transport machines, drums are common:

  • With a smooth or having a helical groove outer surface on which a rope or chain is wound to lift or move the load;
  • Supporting or moving the load-carrying organ of the conveyor ;
  • Brake, on the outer or inner surface of which brake pads or brake tape act.
