Theater Formation

Building on Chaplygin Street, 1A, 2009

In 1974, Oleg Tabakov created a studio in which 49 students were selected on a competitive basis. Classes were held at the Palace of Pioneers named after Nadezhda Krupskaya in Stopani Lane , located near Chistye Prudy and the Sovremennik Theater . Children were taught acting, the history of world art, the history of Russian theater, dance, stage speech, stage movement and plastic. In 1976, Tabakov scored a course of twenty-six students on the basis of GITIS . Eight graduates of his studio became students: Nadezhda Lebedeva, Igor Nefyodov , Larisa Kuznetsova , Marina Ovchinnikova, Victor Nikitin , Alexei Yakubov , Olga Topilina and Kirill Panchenko . Sergey Gazarov , Vasily Mishchenko , Alexey Seliverstov, Elena Mayorova , Alexander Marin, Mikhail Khomyakov, Marina Shimanskaya , Andrei Smolyakov [3] [4] [5] also entered the course of Tabakov.

Cquote3.svg
We watched three and a half thousand Moscow children aged fourteen to fifteen, selecting only 49 of them ... Two years later, out of forty-nine people, eight remained. I expelled, expelled and expelled, leaving the best of the best. It was pretty cruel, but I also had my own truth: I taught them not for someone else’s uncle, but for us to play on the same stage.

Oleg Tabakov [4]

In 1977, with the help of Yu. L. Goltsman, the head of the Baumansky repair and construction site, Tabakov received the former coal warehouse at 1a Chaplygina Street in operational management. Oleg Tabakov and his students independently cleaned and repaired this room for the studio [6] . The following year, the studio played the first performance based on the play by Alexei Kazantsev, “In the Spring I Will Return to You” directed by Valery Fokin [4] . Tabakov and his students regularly staged performances, gathering a full hall. The theater got the unofficial names "Basement", "Basement Theater", "Snuffbox" [2] [4] [7] [4] .

The studio theater arose from the idea, perseverance, character, artists' love for each other and, most importantly, from faith.

Oleg Tabakov [7]

In 1980, the first secretary of the CPSU MGK Viktor Grishin forbade the studios to gather and show performances, and Tabakov forbade teaching activities for a year. The reason for this was the accusation of an ideologically incorrect reading of the image of Pavel Korchagin in one of the productions [8] . Tabakov’s graduates went to different theaters, but continued to gather at the Tabakerka at night for rehearsals and even released several premieres [4] . In 1982, Tabakov scored a new acting course, which subsequently will become the basis of the troupe of the theater [4] [5] . It included Marina Zudina , Nadezhda Timokhina, Galina Churilova, Sergey Belyaev , Alexei Serebryakov , Sergey Shkalikov , Alexander Mokhov , Evdokia Germanova [9] . In 1986, the Deputy Minister of Culture signed an order to create a theater studio under the direction of Oleg Tabakov [4] [10] [11] . The official opening of the “Snuffbox” took place on March 1, 1987 with the performance “Armchair” based on the story of Yury Polyakov “State of emergency of a district scale” [11] [12] [13] .

Building a New Stage

In 1989, the Morgosispokom handed over to Tabakerka several buildings on Spartakovskaya Street near the Baumanskaya metro station to equip a theater in them. However, construction did not begin [14] . On February 25, 1997, the Moscow Government issued Decree [1] [15] , which referred to the construction of a multifunctional complex, including premises for the theater at Furmany Pereulok , Building 8. Financing was to be provided through the sale of buildings on Spartakovskaya Street. Construction did not begin again due to the 1998 default [14] . In 2001, they returned to the project. But when developing the architectural concept and landscape-visual analysis, it turned out that building a theater on the proposed site is impossible. Therefore, the mayor's office transferred the construction site to Triumfalnaya Square , building 1. There was a parking lot at this address, and until 1974 the Sovremennik Theater [14] . In April 2003, at a meeting of the Moscow Mayor, construction on Triumfalnaya Square was found to be too expensive and inappropriate. They decided to arrange the premises for the theater at Gilyarovskogo Street , possession 2-4 ( Malaya Sukharevskaya Square , 5) as part of a multifunctional complex [16] . Construction on Sukharevskaya Square began only in 2007. Actors of the troupe laid a commemorative capsule with their autographs and photographs, as well as messages to future generations [13] . In 2008, due to the economic crisis, construction was frozen [14] and resumed only in 2012 [1] [17] . In 2016, the building of the multifunctional center was completed [17] [14] [18] . The building is a multi-storey building (5-11 floors) with three underground levels. The project of the complex was developed by the A-495 architectural bureau headed by Pavel Kacharava [19] [20] . The construction was financed by the general contractor - the Tashir construction company [17] [19] [21] . "Snuffbox" covers an area of 5000 m² from the basement to the sixth floor (the theater occupies in the center of the premises an area of more than 19 thousand m²) [16] [21] [22] . At the expense of the city budget funds, the interior of the theater was completed, the delivery, installation and commissioning of the theater-technological systems were carried out, with this money we bought computer equipment and musical instruments [1] [20] .

For almost 20 years, during which this scene was built, I was waiting for the fulfillment of my dream, which, fortunately, was realized.

Oleg Tabakov [23]

The grand opening of the stage took place on September 15, 2016 and was broadcast on the TV channel “ Russia K ”. Among the guests were the artistic director of the Satire Theater Alexander Shirvindt , the head of Lenkom Mark Zakharov , the chairman of the Union of Theater Workers of Russia Alexander Kalyagin , the artistic director of the Vakhtangov Theater Rimas Tuminas , the vice-mayor of Moscow Leonid Pechatnikov and the head of the Moscow Department of Culture Alexander Kibovsky . At the evening, Evgeny Mironov and Vitaly Egorov performed with comedy numbers, Kristina Orbakaite , Polina Gagarina , Leonid Agutin , Alexander Gradsky , students of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet under the direction of Nikolai Tsiskaridze . The first performance “Sailor silence” based on the play by Alexander Galich directed by Oleg Tabakov was played on September 27 [1] [20] [23] .

Modernity

In 2007, at the initiative of Oleg Tabakov, a sculptural composition of bronze figures “Dramatists” was installed near the stage on Chistye Prudy in honor of playwrights Alexander Volodin , Alexander Vampilov and Victor Rozov . The authors of the composition are the rector of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts Albert Charkin and the director of the Tsarskoye Selo Museum-Reserve Ivan Saytov [24] . In 2017, a documentary “ Oleg Tabakov and his“ Chickens of Tobacco ” was shot about the theater, which premiered on Channel One [8] [25] [26] .

The founder and artistic director of the theater Oleg Tabakov died on March 12, 2018 [27] .

On April 23, 2018, the artistic director Vladimir Mashkov proposed renaming the theater [28] . On July 4, 2018, the institution’s press service issued a statement that in the new season the Moscow Theater Studio under the direction of Oleg Tabakov will be called the “Oleg Tabakov Theater” [29] . The 33rd season opened in the theater on September 4, 2018 under a new name and with a new logo [30] .

Clean Ponds Scene

The theater stage is a basement in building 1 on Chaplygin Street. The building was built in 1910-1912 according to the project of Gustav Gelrich and is intended for the apartment building of the Gribov brothers. The room has an auditorium and a rehearsal room, a small lobby and several administrative rooms [20] . The auditorium is designed for 114 seats [31] [17] , its area is 120 m² [32] .

The auditorium of the theater is designed for 398 seats [20] [33] . It has a system of virtual room acoustics, which creates a "presence effect", immersing the audience in the acoustic atmosphere of the performance [20] [33] [34] . The size of the scene is 12x6 meters on the portal, and its depth is 13 meters. The platform is equipped with a drum circle system with a ring, hatches-dips, three built-in lifting and lowering plungers, a stage tablet transformation mechanism, due to which it can be increased in depth by 4.5 meters, providing an upscale by lowering the first four rows in the hold, complex top mechanics (electromechanical counterbalanced decorative and point lifts, spotlights bridge, spotlights farms) [20] [14] [34] [35] . The theater has a rehearsal room corresponding to the size of the stage [20] [14] [36] . The lobby is decorated using porcelain stoneware, stainless steel, glass and wood [20] [37] .

Art and Production Plant

The art and production plant is located at Izhorskiy proezd , house 7. It produces decorations, props, furniture and various advertising materials for both the Tabakerka itself and other theaters [38] . The plant includes a fitter's and fake workshop, a high-tech printing workshop, and an electrical workshop [38] .

Theater School

In 2008, the Moscow government ordered the creation of a theater college under the direction of Oleg Tabakov [39] . The school opened in 2009 at house 20 on Chaplygin Street, but instruction began only in 2010 [10] [14] . Moscow Theater College under the GBU of Moscow Culture “Moscow Theater under the direction of Oleg Tabakov” is a boarding college and provides secondary vocational education. The college is funded by the budget of Moscow. The college does not provide paid educational services [39] [40] . A maximum of 72 people can attend college. Annually, 24 students are enrolled among children 14-15 years old who have completed 9 classes. To do this, theater teachers travel to cities of Russia and arrange castings. The school provides students with food and accommodation [39] [41] .

The fundamental difference between our acting college was that during the year, teachers themselves romp around the country in search of young talents. And the fact that the theater needs nuggets from the hinterland and it is necessary to begin to study acting as a part of sizmalism is my long-standing conviction.

Oleg Tabakov [39]

The total area of the school building is 2608.5 m². College premises include bedrooms (accommodation for 2-3 people), a dining room, laundry room, independent rooms, a library, administrative and educational rooms, music and dressing rooms, a ballet hall, a training theater with 72 seats, dressing rooms and dressing rooms, rest rooms, medical office [39] .

The theater played: Sergei Bezrukov , Evgeni Mironov , Alexei Serebryakov , Valery Nikolaev , Irina Apeksimova , Anastasia Zavorotnyuk , Natalya Tenyakova , Yana Troyanova , Marina Zudina , Pavel Tabakov [9] [26] .
