He made his first voyage to the Mediterranean Sea , becoming the first American nuclear-powered ship in ten years to enter the Mediterranean Sea.

In 1980, he participated in the operation Eagle Claw (an attempt to free the hostages at the US Embassy in Tehran), after the failure of the operation he returned to the base after spending 144 days at sea.

On May 26, 1981, an EA-6B Prowler crashed on an aircraft carrier during landing, killing 14 people and injuring 45. Responsibility for the incident was assigned to the deck crew. A judicial investigation revealed that some of the dead conscripts used marijuana . After this incident, US President Ronald Reagan passed a decree according to which all US troops passed a drug test .

In August 1981, during the exercises held in Sidra Bay (Mediterranean Sea) two American F-14s from Nimitz shot down two Libyan Su-22s ( incident in Sidra Bay ).

In 1986-1987, a transition was made from Norfolk to a new place of registration in the city of Bremerton .

In 1988, Nimitz provided security during the Olympic Games in Seoul .

In February 2008, in the Pacific Ocean, two Tu-95MS Russian Long - Range Aviation aircraft simulated an attack on the aircraft carrier Nimitz, flying in the immediate vicinity. When the Russian aircraft left about 800 km to the ship, four F / A-18s were lifted to intercept. At a distance of 80 km from the aircraft carrier group, American aircraft were able to intercept the Tu-95, but, despite this, one of the strategic bombers flew twice over the Nimitz at an altitude of about 600 meters, the second flew 90 km from the ship. [3] [4]

From 2011 to the summer of 2013, the power plant was undergoing repairs in Bremerton [5] [6] , but on May 11, 2013, it arrived at the South Korean port of Busan to participate in joint exercises. [7]
