In July 2016, she was elected Governor of Tokyo , winning the election of former Minister of National Affairs and the journalist and TV presenter Shuntaro Torigo [1] .
Despite the fact that Yuriko Koike is also a member of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) , she nominated herself as an independent candidate. Koike nevertheless counted on the support of the party, but the leadership of the LDP nominated Hiroy Masoud as a party candidate. Moreover, the leaders of the Tokyo branch of the LDP under threat of punishment forbade party members to support Yuriko Koike. But despite the lack of support from its own party, Koike conducted a successful election campaign and won 44.49% of the vote, taking first place. LDP candidate H. Masouda received only 27.40% of the vote [2] .
In the prefecture elections in July 2017, her party took first place, ahead of the LDP.
