Alcanivorax

Alcanivorax (lat.) - a genus of gram-negative , obligate aerobic or microaerophilic rod-shaped marine bacteria . Representatives of the genus are capable of biodegradation of hydrocarbons [1] [2] . The genus was first described by Yakimov, Golishin, Lang, Moore, Abraham, Lusdorf and Timmis on the basis of the newly discovered Alcanivorax borkumensis typus , a marine bacterium capable of degrading hydrocarbons and producing surfactants [3] . In 2003, the genus was amended and supplemented as an earlier heterotypic synonym for Fundibacter Bruns et Berthe-Corti 1999 [4] .

Content

Biological properties

Chemoorganeterotrophs , aerobes. They are able to use alkanes as the sole carbon source, they are the dominant microflora of marine oil pollution, provided that sources of phosphorus and nitrogen are available [5] [6] , and they form extracellular membrane-bound surfactants. Halophiles are capable of growth in the presence of 0.5-12% NaCl in a nutrient medium. Rod-shaped, non-spore-forming immobile or motile due to the presence of a polar located flagellum of the bacterium.

Classification

As of September 2017, the genus consists of 11 species [7] :

  • Alcanivorax balearicus Rivas et al. 2007
  • Alcanivorax borkumensis Yakimov et al. 1998 typus
  • Alcanivorax dieselolei Liu and Shao 2005
  • Alcanivorax gelatiniphagus Kyoung kwon et al. 2015
  • Alcanivorax hongdengensis Wu et al. 2009
  • Alcanivorax jadensis (Bruns and Berthe-Corti 1999) Fernández-Martínez et al. 2003
  • Alcanivorax marinus Lai et al. 2013
  • Akkermansia glycaniphila Ouwerkerk et al. 2016
  • Alcanivorax pacificus Lai et al. 2011
  • Alcanivorax venustensis Fernández-Martínez et al. 2003
  • Alcanivorax xenomutans Rahul et al. 2014

Value

San Francisco Bay Oil Spill

Oil and oil products pollution of marine ecosystems is one of the main types of pollution. Oil and oil products are toxic to most marine aquatic organisms , and oil pollution of the seas and oceans has a negative effect on populations of seabirds [8] [9] and marine mammals. Representatives of the genus Alcanivorax are important at the first stage of bio-purification of oil pollution of marine ecosystems, being the dominant microflora of oil pollution [10] .
