The Prime Minister of South Africa is the head of the government of South Africa , and then South Africa in 1910 - 1984 .
Until 1961, the Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa was the head of the executive branch and was appointed Governor General , representing the person of the monarch of Great Britain , the former king of South Africa.
With the proclamation of the Republic of South Africa in 1961 , which had a parliamentary form of government, the post of State President of South Africa , who performed ceremonial functions, was introduced.
In 1984, as a result of the adoption of the new constitution undertaken by Peter Willem Botha , the post of prime minister was abolished and the post of president made executive.
