In the north, the bay is bounded by the Cape Ann Peninsula , in the southern part is the Cape Cod Bay, bounded by the eponymous peninsula . The western part of the bay is called the Boston Bay , it houses the port city of Boston .
The bay gave the name to one of the first settlements in New England - the Massachusetts Bay colony . The large number of bays on the coast of Massachusetts gave him the nickname "Gulf State."
