About the Museum

Memorial plaque on the museum building

A unique museum of this kind in Russia and the world. It does not have a permanent exposure. The attention of visitors (the hall is designed for 37 seats) is represented by one single painting, a detailed story about which is preceded by a slide film about the life and work of the artist. The session lasts 45 minutes. It includes a slide film telling about the culture of the era when the artist lived and worked. On slides, viewers get acquainted with the work of the master, his most significant works. At the end of the film, the curtain opens and the audience sees a picture, the screening of which is also accompanied by explanatory text and music.

All literary and musical compositions were staged according to the scripts of Moscow writer V.I. Porudominsky, directed by L. B. Velednitskaya . The text was read by leading actors of the capital's theaters: Mikhail Ulyanov, Oleg Efremov, Oleg Tabakov, Rostislav Plyatt and others. Director of slide films V. P. Sazonov.

The museum is located in a building that is an architectural monument of the second half of the XIX century.

The author of the idea and the initiator of the creation of the museum is Georg Vasilievich Myasnikov (1926-1996), the second secretary of the Penza regional committee of the CPSU. On March 6, 2002 the museum was given his name, and a memorial plaque dedicated to G.V. Myasnikov was opened on the museum building. After the opening of this museum, according to Academician D. S. Likhachev, the "Penza Museum Renaissance" began.

In January 2013, it was closed for re-equipment with new multimedia technologies and repairs. The museum is currently operating as usual. Every day, except Thursday, at 13:00 a session for single visitors is mandatory.

According to the Russian edition of Forbes magazine (2011), the museum is one of six notable museums in the world (under No. 3) dedicated to one thing that deserves everyone’s attention [2] .
