Ravensbrück icon

The Ravensbrück icon is an icon revered in the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian Greek Catholic Church , depicting the Virgin , embracing a baby or youth of Christ , already crucified on the Cross. It was first created using embroidery technique by the Martyr Mother Mary in the Ravensbrück concentration camp in 1945 , hence the name. The composition is close to the venerated Akhtyr icon , however, the difference is that on the last Christ is depicted crucified in His full earthly age.

The Ravensbrück icon is a vivid example of the application of the reverse perspective , characteristic of Byzantine iconography, since the figure of the Mother of God is much larger than the figure of Christ the lad, although it is located behind it.
