The source is in the mountains of the Western Cordillera , then the river flows north along a deep and wide (up to 80 km) valley. The isthmus of San Pablo separates the Atrato Valley from the valley flowing south to the San Juan River . When flowing into the Gulf of Urab [3] of the Darien Gulf of the Caribbean Sea, the river forms an extensive marshy delta in the southern part of the Darien Gulf , starting from Guayabal [4] .
The Atrato River feeds on rains, carries a lot of sediment. River sand contains gold. The main tributaries are the Truando, Sucio and Murri rivers. In several places along the river runs the border between the departments of Choco and Antioquia .
The Atrato Riverbed was considered as a passage for the transoceanic canal, but preference was given to the canal in Panama .
