History
The Capitol was designed by architect Richard M. Upjon in 1871 - 1878 - the building was to replace the old State House built in 1792 . The capitol was opened during the General Assembly in January 1879 . The total cost of work amounted to 2.5 million dollars. Later, in 1979 and 1989, reconstruction of premises and facades was carried out.
In 1971, the building was included in the list of major US attractions .
Architecture
Capitol architecture is eclectic , but the predominance of the neo-Gothic style of the Victorian era is noticeable. Facade decoration made of marble and granite . Wall bas-reliefs depict scenes from the history of the state, as well as portraits of the most significant people in Connecticut . The building is crowned by a 81-meter tower with a golden dome. On its ledges 12 statues are installed, symbolizing agriculture, commerce, education, music, science and the army.
