Sports career

Sergei Rutenko in one of the matches for Ciudad Real in the Champions League

Sergey Rutenko is a pupil of the Minsk handball school [3] . In 2000, as part of the youth team of Belarus, he became the silver medalist of the European Championship and moved from Minsk Arkatron, where he began his playing career, to the Slovenian club Gorenie. A year later, he signed a contract with the leader of the Slovenian handball, the Lashko Brewery club. The year 2004 was very successful for the athlete - in addition to the next national titles, Sergey Rutenko won the Champions League with the team from Celje , having won in the dispute of the top scorers of this tournament [4] [5] .

In the same year, Rutenko agreed to accept Slovenian citizenship. He spent his debut match for the Slovenian team at the Athens Olympics against the Russian team , the colors of which were defended by Rutenko’s club partner Eduard Koksharov . In total, Sergey spent 40 matches for the Slovenian national team, scored 269 goals; became the top scorer of the 2006 European Championship (51 scoring shots).

In 2005, Rutenko moved to play in one of the strongest clubs in Europe - the Spanish “Ciudad Real”, with which he won three victories in 4 seasons in the Champions League, League and ASOBAL Cup. In January 2008, on the initiative of the leadership of Ciudad Real, in view of the limited quota for foreign players in the Spanish League, he accepted Spanish citizenship.

Around the same time, Sergey Rutenko announced his desire to return to the national team of Belarus (for which he had not played since June 2001) immediately after the required three-year period since his last official match for Slovenia. The Spanish Federation did not begin to obstruct [6] [7] .

In the summer of 2009, the handball player moved from Ciudad Real, which is experiencing financial problems, to Barcelona , signing a 5-year contract with the Catalan club. The transfer amount was a record for the world handball of € 1.2 million [8] .

In January 2010, Rutenko was included in the extended application of the Belarus national team for the qualifying tournament of the World Cup 2011 , but due to legal barriers, the player’s return to his home team was postponed. According to the regulations, a player must have at least 12 months of experience in its national competitions before the first match for the national team of a new country, and disputes arose about whether they mean the total experience or the last year of a three-year quarantine, as the European Handball Federation interprets this rule [ 9] . As a result, only in September 2010, Sergei Rutenko officially received the right to play for the national team of Belarus [10] [11] . Since November 2011 he is the captain of the national team.

For six seasons spent in Barcelona , he won five championships and four ASOBAL Cups, in 2015 for the sixth time in his career he won the Champions League .

In 2015, Rutenko left Barcelona . After a short visit to the Qatari Lehvia, in April 2016, after recovering from an injury, Sergei was introduced as a player in the Minsk SKA [12] . For outstanding sports achievements in September 2016 he was awarded the honorary title “ Honored Master of Sports of the Republic of Belarus ” [13] .

January 12, 2017 Sergey Rutenko announced the end of his career [14] . The athlete said that he decided to focus on a project that is not related to sports. “If my experience is in demand in handball, I will share it with pleasure. Now I’ll take up a project that is not related to sports. I plan to maintain good relations with the federation, the national team, ”said Sergey Rutenko [15] .
