Biography
Born in the city of Karatau . He graduated from the Alma-Ata State Medical Institute with a degree in a psychiatrist .
Literary creativity began around 1986 (some of the early works were never published). The first science-fiction story " Violation " was published in the journal "Dawn" ( Alma-Ata , 1988 ) [4] . Then, in the same year, the story “ Beyond the Forest, Where the Vile Enemy ” is published in the Ural Pathfinder magazine, thanks to which it is subsequently published in India (in the children's magazine Junior Quest, India / ALN, No. 10), then in the USA [5] , and the author himself has the opportunity to go to the seminar of science fiction writers "Dubulti-89" and the festivals " Aelita -89" and "Novokon-89". There he meets his future co-author Vladimir Vasilyev and many other science fiction writers. In 1989, the story “Choice” was published in No. 10 of the journal “Inventor and Innovator” [6] .
In the same year he begins work on his first novel, The Knights of Forty Islands . The previous novel "The Adventures of Stora" (in contrast to the cycle of parodies of the same name) remains unpublished. Fully novel completed by 1990 . At this point, the author is the owner of more than a dozen publications of stories in magazines and collections, as well as two stories, " Thirteenth City" and " Pier of the Yellow Ships" , published by the publishing houses " Young Guard " and " Ural Pathfinder ." These stories were reprinted only in 2006 in the publishing house " AST " in the collection " Pier of the yellow ships ".
In February 1990, he met his future wife; in September of the same year they got married.
In the period from 1990 to 1992, he manages to write three new novels in the cycle “Lord from the Planet Earth”: “The Princess is worth death” , “The Planet that does not exist” and “The Sea of Glass” , and also starts the story “The Boy and the Darkness” . In the same period, he wrote such significant works as the story “Atomic sleep” , the stories “L means people” , “The road to Wellesberg” and “My dad is an antibiotic” . The author often visits the conventions, becomes a participant in the seminars "Yalta-90", "Yalta-91", " Aelita -92", " Aelita -93", "Tiraspol-93", " Sibcon -93" and " Interpresscon -93".
In 1992 he bought himself a typewriter “Brother” and during the week wrote three stories in a row - “Fugu in uniform” , “Servant” and “Train to a warm land” . A year later, they are published in the journal “Fantakrim-MEGA” , and subsequently the first two receive prestigious authorial awards “Interpresscon” (1995, 1996) [7] .
At the end of 1992, the St. Petersburg publishing house Terra Fantastica published the novel Knights of Forty Islands simultaneously with the first author’s collection, including the stories Atomic Dream (aut. 1990 ) and Eighth color of the rainbow (aut. 1989 ). The following year, at the seminar "Interpresscon-93" met with science fiction writer Julius Burkin and gives him the first edition of his novel.
In April 1993, he received his first author 's Start award for the best debut compilation Atomic Dream. After graduating from the institute in 1992, he worked as a psychiatrist for one year residency, after which he became deputy editor-in-chief of the Mira science fiction magazine under the Kazakhstanskaya Pravda newspaper, where, in particular, he published his stories Almost Spring and Fugu in uniform . She also leads the fiction department of the magazine Zarya and is on the editorial board of the newspaper Malvina .
In the spring of 1993, Yuli Burkin arrived in Almaty and got a job in the Kazakhstanskaya Pravda newspaper. Having met with Sergey, he invites him to write a story in co-authorship. Sergey agrees, and in a month the finished story gets the title “ Today, Mom! ". This helps Sergei get out of the writer's crisis and finish the story “The Boy and the Darkness” , so he suggests writing another story in co-authorship. Julius agrees, and the story "The Island of Russia" also turns out to be ready in less than a month. However, by this time Julius was forced to leave for Tomsk, therefore the authors are working separately on the third story, “Tsar, Tsarevich, King, Prince” . However, by 1994, the trilogy is over, part of the novel is published in the newspaper "Evening Novosibirsk" and receives an incentive prize at the festival "White Spot-94".
In 1994, the second author's collection was published, which includes the entire cycle “Lord from the planet Earth” and a series of stories. At the end of 1994, the author acquires a computer and, after a brief writing crisis associated with a fad of computer games, writes a novel, based on the names of the races and planets of the game Master of Orion . The first part of the dilogy "Line of Dreams" is completed by April, and the second - the "Emperors of Illusions" - by September 1995 .
By that time, he manages to visit countless conventions, such as Interpresscon- 94, Interpresscon -95, White Spot- 94, Fancon-95 and Sibcon-95. In March 1995, at the fiction festival in Krasnoyarsk, he received the “Wanderer” genre award “The Sword of Rumaty” for the novel “The Knights of Forty Islands” , and in May - the “Interpresscon-95” award for the “Fugue in Uniform” story. Since June 1995, the author has been able to communicate on the Fidonet computer network, where he publishes, in particular, a number of works that are subsequently published in collections, “The Eastern Ballad of the Valiant Cent” and “Dural Sky” .
Immediately after finishing the work on dilogy, in October 1995 , the writer begins work on the novel “Autumn Visits” . At the same time, he is writing the story “A Week of Failures” for a future collection based on the works of the Strugatsky .
By March 1996, having finished work on the novel in accordance with the agreement of the publishing house “Lokid”, he begins to write two new novels, first “Stars - cold toys” , and then “Labyrinth of reflections” . By this time, despite the delay, the novels “Line of Dreams” and “Emperors of Illusions” , the trilogy “Lord from the Planet Earth”, as well as the collection of early fiction “Deferred Retribution” are published. After this, a collection of “The Time of the Students” is published, in which the novel “A Week of Failures” was included under the title “Temporary Vanity ” .
In Moscow
By the autumn of 1996, the author finishes his work on the “Labyrinth of Reflections” and leaves Alma-Ata forever, moving to permanent residence in Moscow. The main arguments are the proximity to the publishers and too high cash costs of numerous trips to Russia. By the end of 1996, he finishes work on the novel “ Stars - Cold Toys ” and immediately after moving to Moscow, together with Nick Perumov, begins work on the novel conceived while communicating in Fidonet under the initial name “Moments of the Day, Moments of the Night”.
In 1997, he signed a contract with AST and Terra Fantastica publishing houses to publish two of his new books in the Star Maze book series. In June, this series of “Labyrinth of Reflections”, and in July - “Stars - cold toys”. In the meantime, a joint romance of co-authors, called “ No Time for Dragons ”, is published by the publishing house Eksmo . In August 1997, he began work on a new novel , Cold Shores , completing it in full by November of that year.
In 1998, the novel “Night Watch” was released , which marked the beginning of a new series (“Day Watch”, “Twilight Watch”, “Last Watch”, “The Little Watch”, etc.) and became very popular in connection with the adaptation in 2004. In 2005, the film “Day Watch” was released , which, despite the title, is mainly based on the second and third parts of the novel “Night Watch” and only partially on the novel “Day Watch”. In both films, Lukyanenko was a screenwriter.
In November 2008, the writer took part in the game “ What? Where? When? "In the team of Valdis Pelsh and correctly answered the question about the film" Back to the Future ", thanks to which his team won the victory [8] .
He considers his work partly postmodern [9] .
In January 2010, Expert magazine ranked the top ten Russian writers, in which Lukyanenko shared the 5th to 7th places with Alexander Kabakov and Boris Akunin . The magazine gave writers an assessment of seven parameters: "Awards", "Acknowledgment of Experts", "Circulations", "The presence of fans", "Publicity", "Availability of screen versions", "Reputation", and in the amount of Lukyanenko, as well as Kabakov and Akunin, scored 26 points, and for awards Lukyanenko received one point (the magazine mistakenly thought that he did not have any awards), eventually lagging behind 5 points from the winner - Viktor Pelevin - and 3 points from Ludmila Ulitskaya [10] .
Since January 2010, he has been writing the author’s column in the Internet-based newspaper “ Vzglyad ” [11] .
Since December 2010, he worked on another novel from the “Dozorovsky” cycle - “ New Dozor ”, which was published in 2012.
In 2011, together with co-author Vladimir Vasilyev, he takes part in the TV project “City of Miracles, or the New Year Watch” [12] , a free New Year interpretation of “Patrols” on Ukrainian television.

Post caused sharp criticism of many visitors LJ. On the same day, Lukyanenko announced the closure of the magazine doctor_livsy, after which he created the magazine dr_piliulkin [28] .
In August 2011, due to frequent disruptions in LiveJournal, Lukyanenko started a web- based blog.lukianenko.ru [29] and led it until November 2011. Notes from it were broadcast in the journal dr_piliulkin. The writer again kept a diary in Live Journal under the name dr_piliulkin on 04/04/2017.
