The city was founded in 1638 , when about five hundred Puritans left the Massachusetts Bay Colony and founded the New Haven colony . A year later, they laid the streets in a grid of four by four, creating what is now widely known as the “Plan of Nine Squares”. The center of this block, called New Haven Green , with an area of 6 hectares, is the US National Historic Site .
The city has developed the production of firearms and ammunition , watches , electrical goods, industrial equipment and tools, developed instrumentation and the chemical industry .
The New Haven has the mouth of the Quinnipiac River.
