Slap Happy and Dum-Dums organized his first group with school friends in 1967. Originally played drums. His musical tastes in the mid-1960s were heavily influenced by artists such as Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce, and then Motown , James Jameserson and Tim Bogert from Vanilla Fudge , Cactus and Beck, Bogert & Appice . Murray switched to bass shortly before starting his studies in graphic design at London College of Printing.
In 1973, Neil briefly played in Gilgamesh , a jazz fusion band led by Alan Gowan. After leaving her, Murray toured the United States with Junior Hanson on the recommendation of bass player Jeff Back Clive Chapman.
In 1974-1975 he played in the Cozy Powell's Hammer band. Don Airy and Bernie Marsden played there. After Cozy Powell decided to disband the Hammer band, Murray and Airy joined the updated version of the British jazz rock band Colosseum, called Colosseum II and led by drummer John Heisman.
He is currently collaborating with David Young , Elliott Ware , Brian Greene and “ The Duchess ” on a joint project called “Space Elevator” .
