Salyan (city)

Salyan (formerly also Salyan ; azerb. Salyan ) is a city in Azerbaijan 130 km south-west of Baku , the administrative center of the Salyan region . Located on the right bank of the Kura River .

Content

History

The Salyans were dependent on the Cuban Khanate and were torn away from it by Nadir Shah . In the middle of the XVIII century, the Salyans were captured by Ibrahim Rudbari. Dissatisfied with his rule, the Salyans turned for help to the Cuban Khan and in 1757 the troops under the command of Fatali Khan took the Salyans, expelling Ibrahim Rudbari and annexing the city to the Cuban Khanate [1] . In the period from 1729 to 1782 - the capital of the Salyan Sultanate . In 1799, the Shemakha khan Mustafa Khan captured the Salyans and appointed his naib there [2] . In 1868, it became the administrative center of the Jevat district of Baku province , and in 1916 received the status of a city. In the period from 1929 to 1930 - the center of the Mugan (Salyan) district. Since 1930, Salyan has been the administrative center of the Salyan region.

Population

According to the All-Russian Census of 1897, 11,787 people lived in Salyan [3] [4] , mainly Azerbaijani Tatars (that is, Azerbaijanis) [4] .

According to the 1959 census, the city had 17 197 inhabitants [5] , and in 1975 - 25 700 people [6] . According to the 1979 census of the city, the population of the city reached 26 196 [7] , and in 1989 - 30 396 people [8] .

The city has a ginnery, as well as plants for electric welding equipment, plastic products, soft drinks. None of these plants are operational.

Sport

Mugan football club based in the Azerbaijani Premier League is based in the city. The club performs at the Olympic Stadium with a capacity of 5 thousand spectators (opened in 2008).
