Differences between ZAZ-968M and ZAZ-968A
- The taillights (968 and 968A round, 968M - improved, rectangular).
- The upgraded instrument panel (as previously on the ZAZ-968AE).
- The front panel changed shape, became convex (due to this, the trunk volume was additionally increased), rectangular - instead of round - direction indicators appeared on it, headlight edging - made of black rubber, the front ornament was replaced with a black stripe with the inscription “968М”. Bumpers found removable plastic side parts and a middle rubber band. Thus, ZAZ-968M has much less chrome parts.
- Spare wheel transferred from the trunk under the hood, to the right of the engine. (Since the end of 1991, it has returned back to the trunk, and its place was taken by the battery transferred from the trunk).
- On the ZAZ-968M, three MeMZ-968E, MeMZ-968GE and MeMZ-968BE engines were installed. For all three engines, the base model is the MeMZ-968E engine (41 hp). The MeMZ - 968GE engine (45 hp) differs from the base engine in the installation of a new dual-chamber carburetor type DAAZ 2101-20, as well as a new intake manifold. The MeMZ-968BE engine (50 hp) has the same elements as the 45 liter engine. with. and the additional design of new cylinder heads with a reduced volume of combustion chambers, due to this, the compression ratio increased from 7.2 to 8.4, which allowed the use of AI93 gasoline. Modification 968MP was equipped with a vacuum semi-automatic clutch control.
- Changed engine cooling circuit. Air for cooling began to flow through a stamped grill in the bonnet. Instead of lateral air intakes (“ears”), small grilles (“gills”) remained in the hind wings, and the right grille in the direction of travel was used for additional air intake, and the left - for exhaust. On the rear panel of the body there was also a stamped grille for additional air intake.

ZAZ-968MP
A pickup truck, created in 1990 and produced before the removal of the entire ZAZ-968 line from the conveyor in 1994. In total, approximately 2500 cars were produced. The vast majority of them were operated on the territory of Ukraine, including at the automobile plant itself as a delivery truck. ZAZ-968MP arrived in Russia in single copies.
The model was manufactured using slipway-bypass technology [6] - the rear part of the roof of the ZAZ-968M was cut off by the uprights and the back wall with a window was welded; the edge of the cargo side was a welded bent U-shaped profile. The open cargo compartment was sheathed with hardboard with dermatin (as in the cabin), which led to its rapid deterioration in open conditions, water accumulated in the cavities, which contributed to the development of corrosion .
It turned out to be inconvenient to operate the pickup for its intended purpose - the motor layout blocked access to the cargo from behind, and the high non-reclining side was inconvenient when loading and unloading from the side [7] .
