Biography

Before the start of the game for the adult team “ Sport Recife ”, Manga showed a good game at the junior level, winning the title of Pernambuco state champion for juniors in 1954, conceding less than the rest of the goalkeepers. He made his debut in the adult team "Sport" in 1957 (before that he was in reserve), during a tour of Europe. Oswaldo Baliza , a Sporting goalkeeper, was injured in the very first match, and the 20-year-old Manga entered the goal. Coach Dante Bianchi contributed to getting Manga into the base. Manga spent 2 years at Sport, and then moved to Botafogo , where the team’s coaches paid attention to him and Manga went to the World Championships in England. In total, for 8 years, Manga played 442 matches for Botafogo, in which he missed 394 goals.

After 4 seasons in Nacional, each of which ended with a championship, as well as winning the Libertadores Cup and the Intercontinental Cup, Manga returned to Brazil, to the Internacional club. With him, he won the Brazil Championships of the 1975 and 1976 season. He also played for Gremio and Coritiba , and ended his career in Ecuador, where he won the 1981 national championship.
