Mythology

Earlier, the rock was called Sheytan-Kapu ( Crimean Tat. Şeytan qapu - devil's gate ). It was believed that somewhere there, among the rocks, was the entrance to the underworld. During the existence of the USSR, the rock was called the “Karadag Gate”.

The modern name is associated with the color of the rock: it is covered with yellow lichen, besides the sun's rays at sunset give it an additional red tint.

Passing through the arch of the Golden Gate on a small boat promises the fulfillment of the most secret desire. The bottom near the cliff is covered with coins thrown by tourists.

Place in literature

Picture of Pushkin in the margins of the manuscript " Eugene Onegin "
  • The outlines of the Golden Gate can be seen in the margins of the manuscript Yevgeny Onegin by A. S. Pushkin . The drawing was made 3 years after traveling along the coast of the Crimea aboard the brig "Mingrelia" from Feodosiya to Gurzuf . In rough notebooks, near draftThe XLVI stanzas of the first chapter of Eugene Onegin (October 1823 ) preserved a memory made, but rather accurate, picture of a rock standing in the sea, in which it is impossible not to recognize the famous Golden Gate - Karadag. The poet saw an unusual rock on the night of August 18-19, 1820 . Just below the black rock-arch is a dark figure of a demon in the dark, around which small imps dance and a witch rushes on a broomstick.

Obviously, the rock was known to Pushkin as "Devil's Gate". Next to the picture of the quatrain:

He who lived and thought cannot
In the soul, do not despise people;
Who felt that disturbing
The ghost of irrevocable days ...

Drawing a rock in the sea is not just one of the few landscape drawings of the poet, which has a strikingly accurate, documented and topographical character. He enriches our understanding of the memorable places with which one of the most exciting moments of his life was associated for Pushkin. [2]

  • “There is the Serdolikovaya Bay, where Otuz and Koktebel residents go for carnelians and where the sea tirelessly replenishes the plundered cornelians. Sharp, bare, vegetationless cliffs rise from the sea to a great height, piled on top of each other in wild disorder. And one cannot descend to them from above and one cannot ascend to them from below ”- S. Ya. Elpatyevsky wrote about these places in“ Crimean essays ”.
