Biography
Born on January 26, 1933 in Tiflis (now Tbilisi ).
In 1958 he graduated from the VGIK Faculty of History (workshop of S. Yutkevich and S. Skvortsov ), studied with Alexander Kurochkin , Eduard Abalyan and Alexei Sakharov .
In 1958-1960 - director of the Mosfilm film studio, since 1960 - the Georgia-film film studio. Member of the CPSU since 1965 [3] .
In 1983, he directed the comedy film "Blue Mountains, or an Imagineable Story", which coincided with the beginning of the "perestroika" trends . The film had a favorable press, received the prize of the All-Union Film Festival in 1984, and in 1985 - the USSR State Prize .
In 1993, he directed the absurd comedy Express Information (produced by Georgia and the Federal Republic of Germany ), which was favorably appreciated in festival programs (Tbilisi-93, San-Rafael-94), but had practically no rental.
In 1975-1980 he led the directorial workshop at the Tbilisi Theater Institute named after Shota Rustaveli .
Since 1976 - First Secretary of the Board of the Union of Filmmakers of Georgia and Secretary of the Board of the Union of Filmmakers of the USSR .
In 1985, he was a member of the jury of the XIV Moscow International Film Festival .
He conducted active political activity: from 1981 to 1990 - deputy of the Supreme Council of the Georgian SSR , in 1989-1991 - people's deputy of the USSR . One of the founders of the political opposition organization in Georgia, the Popular Front ( 1989 ).
Since 1990 - Member of the Supreme Council of Georgia (member of the opposition faction "Democratic Center"). In 1992, 1995, 1999 and 2004 he was elected to the Parliament of Georgia , in different years he was chairman of the parliamentary Commission on Culture, deputy chairman of the parliament.
In 1993, he participated in the creation of the political organization “Union of Georgian Citizens”.
