The Institute of Organic Synthesis and Coal Chemistry is the leading scientific institution in Kazakhstan in the field of coal chemical science. Established in 1983 on the basis of the Organic Chemistry Department of the Chemical and Metallurgical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR in accordance with the Order of the Council of Ministers of the USSR No. 948 of May 20, 1983, Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR No. 272 dated June 21, 1983 and Resolution of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR No. 115 dated July 07, 1983.
