Production is the thrust of tectonic plates composed of fragments of the oceanic lithosphere on the continental margin . As a result, an ophiolite complex is formed.
The term was introduced by R. Coleman in 1971 .
Obduction occurs when any factors disrupt the normal absorption of the oceanic crust into the mantle. One of the mechanisms of obduction is the lifting of the oceanic crust to the continental margin when the mid-ocean ridge enters the subduction zone .
Obduction is a relatively rare phenomenon and occurred in earthly history only periodically. Some researchers believe that in our time this process takes place on the southwest coast of South America .
