History

It is assumed that the castle was founded by the princes Kamsarakan , then the castle passed into the possession of Armenian commander Vahram Pahlavuni . Subsequently, it was bought by Armenian rulers from the Bagratuni dynasty, who turned the castle into the main outpost of their kingdom. The church was built in it in 1026 .

The castle was first seized by the Seljuk Turks in the 11th century , and in 1236 the castle was finally destroyed by the Mongols .

From the castle down to the gorge, numerous underground passages led, some of which can be found now. Also, in Amberd there was a water supply system, while only a 4-kilometer part of it was investigated, the beginning has not yet been found. But archaeologists found pieces of pita in a layer dating from the XII century, which was in excellent condition, i.e. it could be soaked and eaten.

Amberd Castle is located halfway to the summits of Aragats in a beautiful and powerful gorge between two rivers.

The three-storey palace occupied an area of about 1500 square meters. Despite the fact that the palace was partially destroyed, artifacts found during excavations indicate that the palace was richly decorated.
