Canon EF 50mm

Canon EF 50mm - A series of normal fixed-focal lenses from the Canon EF family of Canon . Two 50-mm lenses belong to the “L” series , three have an ultrasonic drive (USM) .

There are seven 50mm Canon EF lens models:

  • 50 mm f / 1.0L USM (not available, replaced by f / 1.2L) [1]
  • 50mm f / 1.2L USM [2]
  • 50 mm f / 1.4 USM [3]
  • 50 mm f / 1.8 (not available, replaced by f / 1.8 II) [4]
  • 50 mm f / 1.8 II [5]
  • 50mm f / 1.8 STM
  • 50 mm f / 2.5 Compact Macro [6]

Taking into account the 1.6 × crop factor typical of most non-full-frame Canon EOS digital SLR cameras , the image angle of these lenses for such cameras will be equivalent to the angle of the image of a lens with a focal length of 80 mm installed on full-frame cameras.

Lens Description

EF 50mm f / 1.0L USM

The Canon EF 50mm f / 1.0L USM lens was released in 1989 and is a professional L - series autofocus lens with a fixed focal length, equipped with an ultrasonic AF drive with 9 groups and 11 lens elements. The lens body is metal with plastic inserts.

The maximum aperture of the lens is f / 1.0. This is the only Canon EF lens with this aperture.

Release discontinued in 2002.

EF 50mm f / 1.2L USM

The Canon EF 50mm f / 1.2L USM lens was released in 2006 and is a professional autofocus lens of the L series with a fixed focal length, equipped with an ultrasonic autofocus drive . The lens has replaced the model EF 50mm f / 1.0L on the market. Lens body - metal with plastic inserts.

EF 50mm f / 1.4 USM

The Canon EF 50mm f / 1.4 USM lens was released in 1993 and is a middle class autofocus lens with a fixed focal length, equipped with an ultrasonic autofocus drive (Micro USM). The case of the model is made of plastic with a metal mount mount.

Feature: the only non-L-series lens from a focal length of 50 mm, in addition to 50mm f / 1.8 STM, which, despite the micro-USM drive, has the function of manual focusing (MF) in automatic mode (AF). In addition to the advantages, this led to a decrease in the reliability of the mechanism and its frequent jamming and breakage, which even a small shake can cause.

EF 50mm f / 1.8 and EF 50mm f / 1.8 II

The Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 lens was released in 1987 and is an entry-level autofocus lens with a fixed focal length. It has a carbon body and a metal mount mount.

In 1990, f / 1.8 was replaced on the market by the 50mm f / 1.8 II model, which is generally identical to the 1987 version, but comes in an all-plastic case, has a plastic mount for the bayonet instead of a metal one, and has no distance scale window.

This is the cheapest lens with a fixed focal length in the Canon lineup. Extremely popular with novice photographers.

Release discontinued in 2015.

EF 50mm f / 1.8 STM

The lens replaced the obsolete 50mm f / 1.8 II in 2015, after Yongnuo released the EF 50mm f / 1.8 II clone with a lower price, while it had 7 aperture blades, not 5, like the original . A more modern design, metal bayonet, STM autofocus drive , improved optics coverage and 7 aperture blades made it a very profitable proposition for amateur photographers. As with 50 / 1.0, the manual focus ring of this lens does not have a physical connection with the lens movement mechanism; manual focusing is carried out using an electric drive, which allows you to adjust the focus manually, even in autofocus mode. When used in conjunction with cameras with support for tracking autofocus (Canon EOS 650D and newer, with the exception of the initial 1200D and 1300D), it allows you to shoot video with automatic sharpness adjustment on the subject to be shot. The price at the start of sales is $ 150 US.

EF 50mm f / 2.5 Compact Macro

The Canon EF 50mm f / 2.5 Compact Macro lens was released in 1987 and is an amateur-level autofocus macro lens with a plastic case and metal mount of the bayonet.

The maximum magnification achieved when using a lens is 1: 2, but using the Life-Size Converter EF, which is purchased separately, allows you to achieve a 1: 1 magnification. This converter was designed specifically for this lens and cannot be used with other lenses of the EF family.

A small increase (only 0.5) is only slightly better than that of the usual “whale” 18-55 IS lens (0.34). At the same time, a small focal length causes the front lens of the lens to be positioned very close to the subject of the survey. The lack of stabilization makes it difficult to shoot with hands. In addition, the lens has a considerable price.
